Wife wants to overnight on the new boat for our anniversary. Any recommendations? Can anchor or marina. Looking for good dock parties. Thinking colonial beach?

thanks, dpmulvey. We are at occoquan and for some reason my wife has a thing about national harbor. Don't know why.

I'm leaning more and more to colonial beach. Anyone down there? Recommendations for which marina to stay at?

Tides Inn is the place to go for a Anniversary (especially if you like your wife). They have a spa at the hotel and the town is a great place for dinner. The slip fees were reasonable. My boat is at National Harbor and your wife is right....its not the place for a romantic weekend. http://www.tidesinn.com

Colonial Beach not much IMHO for anniversary either. Tides Inn is a winner for the anniversary event and I have done it myself before big boat and since. No info on your boat so check the weather/sea conditions as its not just around the block. At 20+kn its probably 4plus hours away in good conditions.

Probably 1.5 + hrs closer would be Solomons, not in same class as Tides but not bad

So I take it you closed on it. Congrats.

We loved staying the night at Alexandria City Marina when we lived there. SO many places to walk to and enjoy.

Haha. Not quite yet. Still waiting for the GPS and VHF to be installed...Plus now I'm having the fresh water pump and bilge float replaced. Should be in my slip by the end of the week though. Btw, saw you keep your cover on, but the ac on as well? Boat looks clean, man.

Old town isn't a bad idea at all, thanks! We always enjoyed old town, too. Any info on how they treat transients there?

If you go to alexandria I think you have to register ahead of time on their website or something.

Been years since I've been to old town. Never by boat, but friends who went there a couple of times per year said they were treated very well.

Tides Inn is down on the Rappahanock, not the Potomac. As John said, probably quite a long trip. Great place though.

Our anniversary tradition is to head to Old Town Alexandria. I figure we can live until we're about 100 and still not hit all of the restaurants within walking distance. The City Marina has been great to deal with in the past. Here's their website.

Solomon's Island is another idea, but it's pretty far as well. I think it took us between 4 and 5 hours from the Occoquan to get there last year.

I always enjoy making the trip down to Cobb island. Old town would be great but I have had trouble at low tide trying to climb up out of the boat onto the dock. Might be easier with a 260 since its higher out of the water.

sweet. these are all good options. we'll see what the wife says. yeah, i think solomons and tides inn will be a bit too far, but certainly places we'd want to go eventually - looks really nice!

Been to Solomon's many times however, not by boat. But have put a boat in there. It's a nice picturesque town with several good restaurants.

Luke, which marina do you recommend on Cobb Island, Captain John's? We're probably making an overnight stop either there or in Colonial Beach on the way to the Bay in a few weeks as we're not heading out until after work.

I don't usually stay overnight. I do go to captain Johns for crabs though. There's pirates den marina there also but I have no first hand experience with them.
