Overheating... AGAIN!!!!

On mine, it's 140* to 145*. I was seeing temps in the 190* + range.

Man. . .it makes my eyes hurt to read this thread, all things considered.

Doesn't operating temperature depend on what thermostats you put in? There are 140F and 160F flavors.

My boat (1997 5.7L) has 160F thermostats. Gauges run a touch over 170F. Confirmed via temperature gun after the trouble I had during the summer. Risers run 140F or so (30F spread between the four)

I wanna say I was told mine is 160 and that at idle it would never get to 160.

With a 160F thermostat, the boat temperature should LOCK IN at 160F once warmed up. That is the entire point of the thermostat. Engines are designed to have excess cooling capacity, even at full load. The thermostat shunts the excess cooling around the engine so the the engine can run at optimal temperature even on a cold lake water day at ilde. And at full load. If they STICK, then the engine runs colder.

If you have issues with water flow (pluggage or broken pump), then you LOSE the excess capacity, and you run out of cooling at higher engine loads.

There may be slight variations from the thermostat setpoint because of the details of the temperature sensor instrumentation. My boat had sensors replaced, and thermostats replaced and the temperature is always slightly over 170F on the gauge. An IR gun reveals temperatures closer to 160F in that area.

Sounds like the problem I had with my 1993 230 Sundancer. at idle the temps would hit over 200 with associated alarm. If I was cruising at 3000RPM the temp would be normal. My impeller was bad. R & R'd checks 4.0 on the water!!
