Overhead Stains

I've got a number of water stains in the overhead of my '91 Sundancer...I've had it moisture checked around the hatches, and all seems okay. Any ideas how to make the overhead look new...baring replacing?

What type of covering is on the overhead? Do they look like footprints? Dom's the expert on that.

If it's cloth a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, sprayed on liberally and left to dry over a couple of days will make it disappear. If it is very dark you may need to reapply.

Do you have a carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment? I have used one of those machines, mixing in some carpet cleaner and hot water, and had excellent results.

This is a new one for me - does it need to be wiped off or just let it completely dry on its own?

Thanks for the advice...I've tried the "mixture" and it does help, but doesn't take out all the stains...It's been suggested to maybe dye the fabric. Even trying to find someone to replace the overhead isn't very easy...it's driving me crazy I can't clean the damn thing...

Travis,
Just allow it to dry on it's own. It will continue to lighten the stain for a couple of days. I had water stains from the anchor locker that the spray cleaned up completely.

I have a few water stains on the original headliner in my '89 390 EC. I put the 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol & hydrogen peroxide. together and applied it. Waited an hour and noticed that it was dry. I sprayed another round on it just before I left the boat just before dark. I will report my results. Today is Saturday March. 21, 2009.

UPDATE ON STAINS IN OVERHEAD...

I've been working my ... off over the past few days, trying to take 15 yr old water stains from our overhead...I've FINALLY got it right....we've used a commercial steam cleaner with SIMPLE GREEN and a light schub brush...try it-you'll like it!

Any updates? I just did the same thing so we'll see how it works.

I did not notice any real difference after 3 days. I might try it again but so far I feel like I "waved a baloon in the air".

Yeah - I was worried about that - at least my cabin smells like alcohol now...

That was my suggestion way back in the thread. Glad it worked out for you.

when you said commerial steam cleaner - was that something you rented? Is it similar to a carpet cleaning machine? I've got to do something about my aft cabin it looks terrible. Gives you nightmares. Thanks Don

The one I was referring to was a home carpet cleaning machine that incorporates an upholstery attachment.

One like this...

I used it again when commissioning the boat 2 weeks ago to remove a couple headliner stains from a couple of snaps that needed to be rebedded. The stains came out in 5 minutes.

I use this Bissell Fiber Cleansing (sorry not Dow) carpet cleaning agent. Works great.

If you just can't get it out, use spray paint. I know, it seems like a really odd thing to be doing, but it works! Spray paint your headliner! Sometimes you can just spray it on and be done (maybe a little blending). Other times, spray it - then take a sponge and dab it in a little bit.

If you can find spray paint for vinyl/fabric that's great. If not, I've used regular spray paint with excellent results.

Just a little bit at a time.

Believe it or not, my couple of snaps looked almost as bad as that. The vacuum pulled the stains up in 5 minutes no lie.

I then sealed the snaps = problem solved.

Seeing this thread again reminded me to post an update. So I did the 50/50 mixture twice with minimal results except for a smelly cabin. However - it did appear to lighten it up slightly. The good news is I was able to use Spray Nine and it wiped right off this time with a towel. I had tried the same cleaner before and even with scrubbing they wouldn't come off. My headliner is the vinyl material so your results may vary - but it certainly made my removal easier.

Glad the carpet cleaner worked for the others - I need to do that to the actual cabin carpet. If I could only convince my wife to get rid of her constantly shedding dog! One of the many things I love about my Boxer is very minimal hair loss and it doesn't show up on anything.
