Over the Air Digital TV

Its been a few months since I got my boat. The dealer recently installed a new digital capable TV.

The Glomex antenna says that it is both analog and digital.

When I am on Lake Lanier though, I dont get any channels. I had expected to get one or two of the stronger ones.

Should I expect to get any channels on the lake, or do you pretty much have to have satellite?

thanks

Not sure about lake Lanier but the antenna should be OK with digital. Did the dealer set this unit up correctly (need to scan and be sure TV input is set correctly).

Also, make sure you have switched from Cable to Antenna. The antenna feed has a built in amplifier, which is out of the loop when switched to cable. It may also have a gain control. Try first with it turned up all the way. Mine is tucked in one of the little cabinets in the salon.

Did you scan the TV prior to trying to get your channels? You should be able to get channels especially if you are less than 30 miles from your towers. The signals are line of sight.

where is the switch for cable to antennae located ? is it in the transom storage adjacent to the shore power connections ? I installed a digital converter late last season and could not pick up any signal and I am only 25 miles from NYC

It is the Glomex control panel in the cabin somewhere. Mine is forward of the galley tv in a cabinet. It has one rotary knob on the panel. Rotate all the way off until you hear a click to use cable tv. Rotate on all of the way to use the antenna. If you have two signals competing on one channel, turn it down some - I don't think this is a problem with digital signals.

thanks, I have tried the Glomex panel, mine is just to the right of the salon TV. it still did not get a signal either at the dock or out in the bay, as its still a good 5 to 6 weeks before I unwrap her I will have to wait and see. after I bring her home I will pull the flying saucer apart and start tracing from there.

Make sure your breaker is on for that circuit, if there is one (probably tied into the stereo 12v). Any indicator lights to show that the amp/selector is getting power?
Pull the flying saucer apart LAST. That is just an omni antenna in a plastic glued together case. I would see if you can pump anything through your TV wiring in the boat first.
Can you hook cable up to the shore inlet and get signal to the TV? If not, then I'd start at the TV and work backwards.

the Glomex panel did have power, I will run a temp. cable feed out to the dock from the house when she's splashed in early May just to confirm that both sets work.

If you can find an old set of rabbit ears or a digital TV antenna - hook that up directly to the TV and test that you get a signal and then start testing each component. Maybe you just have a bad connection somewhere.

Go to www.antennaweb.org and in the marina address. It will tell you what digital channels are available and how far the transmitter is from that location. For my marina no channels are available due to its remote location. Fortunately the marina has a free satellite feed available at the slips.
