Outdrive play

I noticed my outdrive has play in it and can swing as much as two to three inches with a push or when moved by the current while anchoring. is this normal or does it need adjustment?

Not normal. Your gimbal ring is wearing out at the top where the swivel shaft penetrates it.There is a square area that the swivel shaft should fit tightly into. There are two lock nuts that should be kept a 50 ft lbs of torque at the top of your gimbal ring...probably too late but I'd torque them at your next opportunity.
