I just seen something amazing. We sitting at a local bar/restaurant. A large group came in. Wanted food (place has great food). They were told it would be an hour wait. Kitchen backed up with Door Dash orders.
They all left.
Thinking this is wrong. They got customers want to eat, drink, stay for the games, but door dash gets priority.
Seems like bad business. They say you only get one chance to make a first impression. That crowd won’t ever be back.
If it was my bar, I would take care of sitting customers first. Let door dash wait.

Gotta do the math I guess. Value of Door dash order vs. value of sit down order. Can probably turn more door dash orders per hour. Although in this day, I hour wait for good food isn't much. Had the same thing happen at kids college when we visited -- 1 hour at the alumni hang out bar. Just left more time to drink beer and tell the kids our "war stories. " :)

I am in 100% agreement about taking walk in folks over Door Dash. That being said, please define:
Large Group?
What time of day or evening?

My point is, if you’re going to show up with 6+ and it’s the busy time with no reservation then you get what you get. Make a slight plan. My.02

Had a similar scenario back in the mid-Eighties when working at the motorcycle shop. The boss seemed to place more priority on the phone than to any customer standing at the counter, and had any number of them walk out while he was yakking on the phone. I tried to get him to understand that we had a customer in the shop with money in hand, and there was no guarantee that the person on the phone would ever show up.
Now, that being said, things like Door Dash and Uber Eats are a for-sure thing for the restaurants. With the rise in popularity seen during the Covid debacle, a lot of these places could do just fine with on-line orders and not have any of the overhead that it takes to run a sit-down restaurant. It's understandable that they'd rather cater to that clientele than walk-ins.

I know many restaurant owners and I have asked how they deal with door dash/Uber eats/grub hub orders when the restaurant is busy with table service. The consensus among them is that in person orders/tables get priority. After that then their own call in/online orders, and finally the third party services. Some go so far as to turn off the third party service’s when they are slammed and can not fulfill orders in a timely manner.

It is not good business to piss off customer’s visiting your establishment. A lot of restaurants are fighting back with third party delivery services for price hiking, limiting or changing menu’s, and violating the terms of their agreement. Some were wary or repercussions from third party vendors during the lockdowns but many owners are fed up and dumping the services all together.

I just think it’s ridiculous people are so lazy they can’t prepare a meal at home and have to get it delivered.
So Maggie, I liked your post because I agree that a lot of folks are lazy. However comma let me put this scenario out there for you.
You fall between the dock and your swim platform, break six ribs and puncture a lung. (See post #1382 of the “Official 290 Sundancer thread”) Door Dash and Instacart were very helpful through this. I have put on my Nomex underwear and can take the heat. Let us know your thoughts.

Sounds like you met my oldest and her family that's back living with us...
Ugh Nater, we were not supposed to have anyone for Xmas then BOTH sets of twins and their crews came over, love them with all my heart but would not want anyone to move back in. Yikes!

Are you kidding? That's not being lazy! That's using systems that we have for that very thing. I see that as no different than collecting unemployment (for a time) in the unfortunate event of losing your job.

Nater, both girls and my grandson have moved back. I love all three but mom and I love it when they go out for the weekend
So being my own worst critic, older twins (37) full flight feathers, no real chance of moving back unless something catastrophic happens then ok, second set (23) just graduated, working hard, have apartments, boy friends blah blah blah, still paying for twin 2A’s car and mom takes twin 2B for groceries once a week and takes her to work and picks her up. (She never got her license, she’s afraid of crashing and hurting someone). At what point do I say “you’re done?” I’m thinking never.
To set the tone though, neither young one has ever been arrested, pregnant, been in rehab and both finished top 2% in their class. I’ll quit moaning now. Need to go check the bikini thread.

Some of you guys are lucky that your kids are just visiting. The number varies a little depending on what you're reading but....50-58% of young adults age 18-29 live with their parents. A common reason is to increase their disposable income, often to free up their money for luxury items.

I saw the same type answers reported when they thought they were going to get 10-20K knocked of their student loans. They often said it'll help them take some time off, be able to travel, go out and socialize.

I live three blocks from five local restaurants. Two of them do a lot of doordash business, and what's frustrating to me is the driver's park their cars in the street in front of the restaurants, emergency flashers left on like it's an emergency, and you can't get by. And when I order takeout there's usually five to six of them standing around playing on their phones while I'm trying to pick up my order, and have to wait.

Maggie, I'm lucky enough to be married to a lady who is a gourmet cook/chef. When she's planning her menu she checks for recipes from among her 100+ cook books. She loves to cook and is very good at it.

I like to take her out to eat about once a week just to give her a break. So if you saw us in a restaurant, it would be because I want to treat her, not because she's being lazy.

Things aren't always as they appear on the surface.

Not to be putting words into @Maggieiscrazy's mouth, but it seems he was eluding more to the point that people can't even pick up their own food. Have someone else make it, then someone else deliver it. You can even have door locks you can open with your phone so you don't have to get up out of your Lazyboy recliner. My main concern at that point is finding someone who'll empty my bedpan and wipe my lazy butt.

We don't go out to eat very often and as far as I'm concerned it can be even less. I know the places often have problems getting/keeping staff but I'm getting tired of poor service, poor food, and the ever escalating prices. I'm tired of having to see the 20-30-40% tip options, often the math already done...for my convenience of course. The tipping thing is out of hand, what is a tip even for anyway? I'm starting to feel abused.

This weekend I went to pay my bill and I notice a different charge at the bottom right by the sales tax amount. I asked them what it was and they said it was a 'new tax'. I said 'what new tax' and they didn't know so I told them to go find out. Of course it wasn't a 'new tax' at all, it was CC processing fees. Maybe the next time there'll be a new item charge for the guy that cleans the shiter and shovels the sidewalk.
