does the moderator read these?
i want to ask whether he can allow an option for members to "opt out" of a particular forum. I know most people click on "new posts - 24 hours", so they get all forums. and if some people find some of the "holding tank" stuff offensive or trivial then it would make sense if those people could tick a box which says "i dont want to see threads from xxxxx forum"

whadda think?

You know there have been a lot of request for changes on this forum later, and I really wonder why? It seems to be alive and well as it is. I can understand that there may be threads going on that some people do not approve of or find offensive, but the solution to that is very simple, don’t read them. It is a matter of choice here.

Being a member here for a little over a year I have found many new friends, some I have met in person while out on the water, some I have never met but still consider friends. I have also gained so much boat knowledge from this site that would never be possible with just a local source. I like to read some of the “non-boating” thread just because they are funny as hell!

I think the site is just fine the way it is, then again I am one of 10000 plus members so who am I to say.

When you start kicking in some pesos to help defer the cost of the board you can start bitching about it's format. Don't like it ...via...

Very well said, and I agree.

Ditto, my 2 Cents and I will throw this in, there is enough whiney mamby pamby crap going in our society today, and I certainly do not need it here. I try to stay middle of the road on most things, but damn if this does not smack of some tree hugging, liberal, socialism BS.

And before any one gets their panties in a bunch I am all for improvements and the environment, just not rammed down my throat by more inane unfounded and unnecessary Gov-Mint decrees, czar's programs or whatever which is leading to socialism.

I do not mind reading others comments, but if you do, and it has already been mentioned, skip them.

I agree with hack4alivin. One of the issues with a site that attempts to police itself too much is that it sinks to the lowest common demoninator, one that makes everyone happy. With this forum having more than 10,000 members something that is not offensive to everyone is going to be difficult to find. This is now made all the more difficult tecause of international members whose views on political issues are different than those here in the US. I have worked in most European countries and Australia and approaches are different, even from European country to country. The best thing is that if you do not like the Holding Tank don't read any of the posts there-----but they are inticing aren't they?

it amazes me how so many people can misinterpret so many things so often.
re-read my post.

I AM IN FAVOUR OF THE HOLDING TANK AND LOVE THE NON-BOAT BANTER - ALL OF IT.

BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT.

SO I AM MERELY SUGGESTING THAT THOSE PEOPLE (REMEMBER NOT ME) SHOULD BE GIVEN AN OPTION TO TURN IT OFF

how about you respond to that suggestion rather than repeat your bigoted tripe?

You know I was trying to be nice, now I rather like Franks answer better!

i wasnt talking to you bill. your comments were reasoned and entirely without prejudice.

I would find that feature useful (but on a thread level)... but not b/c things offend me. The reasoning... I like to hit "New Posts - 24 Hours" often throughout the day to see what's going on. There are a lot of threads (remember not forums) that don't interest me or don't apply to me. If i had the ability to "hide" a thread i can filter out a lot of noise for myself.

I honestly wouldn't dance around people who get easily offended. Its not worth it. They can go elsewhere. Someone is always going to be offended by something. People need to just relax and move on.

Also... i love this site. I am a developer and understand the cost/time it takes to run a site like this. If it never changed, i'd still be happy. This is just a wish list type item.

hey - you're the guy who says "if you haven't contributed, you can't make suggestions"! - what an enlightened view

i don't need to put you down - you do that very nicely every time you open your mouth

As someone said a few days ago it is going to be a long winter :smt043 How many threads do we have going now that went south like this one

Maybe you should try reading some of the forum information and instructions posted here for your assistance. Under the UserCP, on the left side, Ignore list.

See if this link works on your machine. http://clubsearay.com/forum/profile.php?do=ignorelist

If you put all 10,000+ members on this list, no one will bother you any more.

i think you may have misunderstood my original post. the option you describe is for an individual member, whereas i was talking about a forum.

but it was very kind of you to try to find a solution.

I am here for boating purposes. I really don't care about the non-boating exchanges or who won what football game or the drama and name calling that seems to reside in the non-boating parts of CSR. I am the first to admit to having less computer/internet knowledge that almost everyone else........I do boats; not computers. But even I have figured out that if you don't click on Holding Tank and Tiki Bar you don't have to read that stuff. Try it it works.

To answer your question, no not every thread / post is read. If it's spam and reported it gets deleted. If it turns vitriol and adversarial and gets reported we (Jim and I) are going to look it over and it might get deleted. :smt024

Talk boats, motors, electronics, what ever pertains to boating and if you don't like the non-boating parts of this forum then don't look inside. :smt024

Kevin,

This is the "problem" with the right to free speech. Like Jack said, some people "...can't handle the truth", and find it offensive. The right to free speech is intended to protect "controversial" or "offensive" speech, and came about as a way to prevent our government from disallowing speech that goes against its position. The king tried to supress certain types of speech during colonial times, and our founding fathers knew that our government needed to be prevented from doing the same thing.

That being said, you need to ignore anything that you find offensive and just get on with your life. We can't (and won't) stop people from voicing their opinion.

As an FYI, I find nearly all of your pro-Obama posts to be highly offensive. I read them anyway. In a loose way, I translate them as "we in the UK, as well as most of the rest of the world are totally f^%$#d up. I hope that Obama succeeds in f^%$ing you guys up, too." . That certainly doesn't come across as "friendly" to me.

I hope this sheds some light on why folks are being so hard on you.

Michael

The searches "New posts - 24 hours" and "New posts - 48 hours" shows not only the thread title, but also which forum under which it was filed. Don't want to see holding tank items? Don't click on the thread title that's in the holding tank.

Easy solution. No code changes. Surely those people who are offended by the items in the holding tank aren't too lazy to read across the line to verify that the topic isn't in the holding tank?

Best regards,
Frank C
