One tab moves faster than the other

Hi,

I have a problem with one tab moving about twice as quickly as the other (in both directions) which is a real pain. When I got the boat I installed the N2K sensors before I launched and neither tab seemed to have a problem although I am not sure I compared the speed of the two. Just getting ready to pull out again and wondering what best to check, and what spares to get in advance as I live in Western Australia and am just ordering a box of bits from the US.

Anyone seen this issue before? Ill get some spare compression fitting in case I did one up to tight and restrict oil flow, and I guess I could swap the pipes over on the pump to see if the issues stays with the same tab or switches over.

Any other likely spares to be required to get in advance?

Thanks

Anthony

i have same problem, bennett tech said to reset tabs through reset procedure. going to try since boat is now out of water and i can have someone watch speed

Anthony,

Is this based on the display or on visually observing the Trim Tabs? Also is this happening with the boat running or standing still?

If the tubing is longer to one side than the other the shorter side can run faster than the other. This is most apparent when the boat is standing still. When the boat is moving the water pressure tends to even things out. Check the tubing lengths and let me know what you see.

If you screwed the pipe nipples in too far when you installed the sensors you may have restricted the flow there. Loosening the pipe nipple may solve the problem, but it may leak, and you may have deformed the fluid path permanently. If we suspect that is the case it is best to replace the entire upper hinge / sensor. I can arrange a warranty replacement if needed.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply, its based on both the display and that I can feel the boat lean to one side when I deploy them, I have to let up on one switch intermittently whilst holding down the other to get them to trim evenly. The pipe length is only a few feet longer to one side, so I suspect the blockage as you mention. The boat is back in the water now so I might just put up with it for the time being as I dont really want to disturb the thru hull fittings whilst afloat, but it will be top of the job lust next time she come out and Ill take a look at the fittings and report back.

Thanks for your support

i did recalibrate once when in water hard to see but looked like full range.now that boat is out i will get better look.when boat was in water i would turn battery switch on and right off the bat the tab indicator would show 1 yellow and 1 red light from top down on side that doesnt seem to be in sinc.

recalibrated and it did reset lights on tab switch properly 4 yellows.I have full range with tabs but when lights on right side of switch are all lit tab is only half way down. When you hold down tab switch the lights light up twice as fast as other side.

Is the boat out of the water now? Did you visually confirm the speed at which they are moving (equally?) and if they travel through their entire range and that the range is equal?

If all of these are OK, then try swapping the sensor connections and see if it changes sides.

boat in water now, they move at same speed and both equal range just seems that right side lights on switch panel lite up twice as fast as left side.

OK,

The original poster had the NMEA display. Do you have a NMEA system, a separate display indicator or a control switch with build in display? Also how old is the system?

Please swap the sensor wires at the relay module, and see if the problem changes sides

swapped sensors on relay module and lights on switch did same thing.the lights on right side of switch twice aqs fast as left side.

Ok, before we start swapping parts, I would like you to try recalibrating one more time. Put the sensor wires back in their original position.

This time when you recalibrate make sure both Tabs are in the full up position by holding the lower buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Then press the sun and moon button down simultaneously for aprox 3 seconds until the lower arrows flash.

Using the EIC Display, run both trim tabs to the full down position (Bow Down on the control simultaneously). Make sure the tabs go all the way down by holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds or until the lower yellow LEDs stop flashing. (Holding the buttons after the tabs are down will not harm the system). Hold the buttons longer than you have before.

A few seconds after the tabs are all the way down the port and starboard upper yellow LEDs will begin flashing. Again, using the EIC Display, run both tabs to the full up position (Bow Up on the control simultaneously). Make sure the tabs come all the way UP by holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds or until the upper yellow LEDs stop flashing.

The key is to hold the buttons down and then up longer than you think is necessary, disregard the indicator lights while calibrating.
