Kid brings in his early 00s Jetta for some work. A bit of a pain to lift because he had a set of lowering springs on there...or so we thought.

That is some fancy engineering. Was the car from Kentucky?

While the spring deal has risk, when the brackets break, that is nothing compared to the risk home built lift kits many did in the latter 70's and early 80's.

i used those on my first car (1972 Cutlass) back in the 80's but I had them reversed to raise the back and had them in the front cause my front coils were so worn....lol

We should have a thread about dumb "enhancements" we did to our cars back in the day. Mine:1) shove garden hose up exhaust and turn on the water for a few seconds then start the car--helped blow out the rust and muffler parts making it (sound) more powerful. 2)flip over the air cleaner top to enhance air flow-and (sound) more powerful.
Red '68 mustang 289 2bbl, 3-on-the-floor. Not much of a car but I loved it dearly!

"Gas axe" to cut a coil or two off to lower the car is another fail I've seen over the years.

Yep, I used to flip the air cleaner lid too...lol.
My step-son had a Honda Del Sol automatic but he made it sound like a stick. He would pull up out front and if you didn't know any better you would swear it was a stick.

Oh yeah - flipping the airfilter cover. At one point dad had a Buick Centurian with a big ass motor in it, holy smokes that think sounded great with the aircleaner flipped.

How else were you going to jack up the ass end of your car to get the Mickey Thompson Indy Profile L-60 15’s on your Crager SS mags to fit under there. BTW still a kid don’t need to jack it up but still have the chrome 5 spoke wheels and wide tires on the back.

of course! 8 track too with Jenson 6x9 rear deck speakers. f70x14 white letter tires. Practically waxed the paint off the car too. saved up for dual exhaust with cherry bomb mufflers. Funny to think back!

my first car was a 1972 Cutlass S. I rigged my own dual exhaust for it. I installed headers then took the existing exhaust and cut and added adapters to hook it up then bought pieces of pipe to complete the other side, with glasspacks. i also added air shocks and the coil spacers. i bought the car from my aunt for $200 in 1985. my dad did the mechanical work and my uncle did the body work. i had about $700 in it then a couple months later one of the business owners in my town went through a stop sign and i t-boned him. got $1500 from his insurance and they totaled it but i bought it back for $50. spent $200 on a front clip from a junkyard and drove it for 3 years then sold it to a friend for $700. my net for that car was +$1100 and i drove it for 3 years....lol. best deal i ever had on a car.

I still have the factory 8 track stereo in my 68 GTO and it works perfectly.

'68 GTO, how cool! That was the first muscle car I ever rode in. My buddy's older bother bought one and took us for a ride. I can still remember sitting in the back seat thinking this was the coolest thing ever!
