I was surprised at his ability to out accelerate the other boats when they came alongside him in one of the turns. He just stepped on the gas and left them in his wake, so to speak.

Most race boats (the offshore kind atleast) have forward and reverse but the boats are started in gear due to the torque on the outdrives/lower units.
 
The stock boats are all direct drive VIA chain coupling, our super stocker is also direct drive. super stock, 358, 375 and modified classes can use a v drive most use a Casale case and lock them in so they start in gear anyway.. My hydro also is chain drive..

Advantage to v drive engine sits straight in boat not on 12 or 14 degree angle. oil pans for the direct drive have to be made on 12 or 14 degree angle to fit in boat engine is backwards. advantage to direct drive no power loss through drive train.

Our race boats have been in A/C boat show last 8 years.. Debating on weather or not i want to do the show this year.. 2014 show pic.. extreme and fast times EAST COAST BOAT RACING CLUB BOOTH we also promoted APBA at our booth. Mikeys boat has new 5.0 litre 305 chevy i built for 2014 season..

Pic of chain coupling we just set up engine after building 2 extreme this is the 283 we ran in extreme before going super stock.. boat not painted yet.. maybe ill throw up few boat pics before paint.
