Our yacht club visited Percival Landing in Olympia, WA this past weekend and I wanted to provide some feedback for any boaters considering Olympia for a weekend cruise. The cruise down from Seattle was just lovely - nice, flat, calm water and mostly nice weather. When we arrived we side-tied on the public dock (E-dock). We were having a nice time with our fellow cruise members until we decided to head out to get some dinner at a local restaurant. Just then we observed a homeless man pacing the docks, back and forth, just waiting for us to leave. We ended up having to call the police twice that evening to deal with this guy. I did not feel safe taking our dog for a walk later that evening because the guy was hanging out in the gazebo. Thankfully the police came and escorted him away.
The docks at Percival Landing are in a great location during the day, close to restaurants, the farmer's market (no dogs allowed at the market, btw!), a nice park. At night however, the area can attract some pretty sketchy individuals. (There is a Union Gospel Mission about two blocks away which is probably attracting some of these characters.)
Sunday morning one of our club members found ashes on the aft deck of their boat and greasy hand-prints and neither of them smoke. They were especially concerned because they had forgotten to lock their salon doors.
I think that the marina needs to install some secured gates to prevent those who don't belong on the docks away from the docks. I don't know that they will be able to attract the clubs in the area until additional security measures are implemented.
