Hi, Quick question.
My old transmission on my 1989 Merc 454 I think is low on oil but I just need to know when I put the dipstick in should I screw it all the way in and than measure it or just put it in and pull it out without threading it in. And also do you have a recommended oil to use in them? Thanks!

On my 2001 zf hurths, powered by 496rs, uses standard ATF. I rescrew the cap all the way in and get a full reading on the second notch..

Hope this helps.

Oscar-

I'm not sure what model transmissions that you have, but the ZF Manual for ZF 25's through -85's says DO NOT screw in the dipstick to check oil quanity...

Hold on…………

He has an older boat. On Hurth/ZF transmissions with the expandable rubber plug dipstick, the oil level is checked by inserting the dipstick fully until the rubber plug bottoms (you do not need to tighten it), then [pull it out and check the oil level. On later ZF gears, Carter is correct. Insert the dipstick until the threads on the plug make contact, then pull it out and check the level.

Understand Frank - as the OP did not identify his type of ZF Transmissions, I noted the model #'s that are covered by that procedure...
