We looked at another 48DA today and I noticed what looks like Merc gear lube in the bilge. It was under engine coupler and the transmission. Is that what ZF transmission takes for fluid?

Seller's broker says owners are very meticulous about maintenance. Boat looks very clean cosmetically, but I'm wondering if transmission is leaking. Obviously I would get a survey if we decided to move forward, but I'm curious if you guys can share your thoughts on what it could be.

Thanks!

We have been looking at these as well. What boat is this?

It looks like coolant to me, and maybe like it's lighter around the edges like it's been evaporating? I use the Cummins Fleetguard ES blue in mine.

That definately looks like coolant. A 48 DA, I'm assuming diesels with turbo-charger. Check the banjo fitting on the bottom of the turbo housing coming off of the exhaust manifold.

So sounds like it's definitely not trans fluid if it takes motor oil? That's a relief I would think at least from any long term damage concerns. I'm kind of just thinking along the lines if trans was low on oil and PO ran it that way, it might shorten its life. I'm kicking myself for not sticking my fingers in there to feel it / smell it. I didn't want to get my hands dirty as I didn't even have a rag on me.
