While running our 2005 260 Dancer over the weekend my oil pressure gauge started dropping and it tripped the alarm and cut the propulsion as i came to a slow speed. shortly after the gauge read zero.

I shut off motor and got towed back to my slip just to be safe.

once back at the dock, i located the oil pressure sensor and when i pulled the plug, my gauge shot back up to half at the 50 mark and the alarm shut off.

has anyone had this similar situation ? could it be a bad sensor and a swap could fix this ?

i just had the oil changed 2 weeks ago and there was no oil in the bilge and motor ran fine, even started back up fine

Disconnection would do as you describe but doesn't tell if you have an oil pressure problem or a sender problem. you could put a mechanical gauge where the sender screws in. or go buy another sender to test.

Thanks for this input. Regarding the mechanical gauge, what should it read ? 240OHM?

If you want to be creative, put a "T" in and have both operating. That way you can verify the pressure on the mechanical gauge to the electric one. I do this often for testing and diagnostic purposes

guys, if i were to pull out the oil sensor and run the boat, would that be ok? if the motor were not getting oil from a bad oil pump, that thing would be knocking wouldnt it?

You have to fill the hole with something. 1/8" npt. preferably a gauge.

something else to look at,,,check the inside of the plug that goes onto the sending unit. many times there is corrosion inside the connector. A small wire brush and tiny screwdriver, and you can clean out the corrosion. apply a small dab of die-electric grease to the connector then push it back on. '06 260 DA here, and I've had to clean all connections in engine compartment just because of a little bit of corrosion. Not a model specific problem, just one that most boats incur because of moisture and mother nature. Hope you find the problem.
