What oil are folks using in their generators. The manual shows 30 weight and 40 weight. Depending on the temp. I am in the midwest.

I just changed mine and used 30 wt. For our temps. I figured this would work fine in leu of the 40 wt.

Thats what I was leaning toward. People on my dock have been using the 25w40. Which is not listed in the manual. Where did you get the filter?

We use Rotella 30 wt in West Michigan. Temps run in the 40s in the spring and we put the boat away when it is in the 50s in the fall.

Just ordered filters from MTSPowersystems.com they have all parts for Kohler generators

2007 280 Sundancer

Our Sea Ray Dealer gets the filters from a local car place (like Autozone). I went in to another, and found 3 brands with good filters that fit.

They are direct replacements? Do you happen to know a brand. My mower has a Kohler engine on it. I wonder if it is the same filter?

I haven't been able to find non-Kohler oil filters for the 5kw low CO generator (I believe the 7kw is the same base engine). Can the person who found them post brand/cross ref part number?

C.K. Power is the local distributer in our area. They are only about 5 miles from my house. I usually just stop by there when I need something on my way home from work... They stock a lot of maintenance parts. They are located @ 1100 Research Blvd.

You can also order the Non-Kohler filter from Boat Owners Warehouse (BOW). I know there's one in Fort Lauderdale, not sure if there's one in Miami if that's where you are located.

Also a great thing to have is the Kohler Sea-Spares Kit. It comes in a waterproof parts box that you can store other stuff in, and has the filter, impeller, spark plug and more. Great to keep on the boat.

Not sure if they have changed, but the motor side of my Kohler 5E 1999 is actually made by Kawasaki and came with a Kohler/Kawasaki manual. I use Kohler parts but they are also readily available aftermarket for Kawasaki motors.

The Sea Spares kit is awesome, it comes with the inline fuel filter that my MM dealer didn't even know about let alone stock.

The Kohler 5 and 7.3 ECD are not Kohler engines, they are Kawasaki. The 5 and 7.3 ECD use the EXACT same motor and alternator end. Believe it or not, the only difference is the output circuit breaker and 500 dollars more for the 7.3.

I was Kohler generator field service manager for 5 years, and now sell them. As far as the oil goes, just run what you are running in the mains, that way you don't need two different oils onboard.
