Oil for 3116TA Cats

Reverso Impeller on order....now...any advise on changing it???

Also, do you guys do oil analysis prior to your change? I am going to order the kit from CAT.....any advise here?

Reverso Pump

To make the work easier remove the side guard, four five screws will open up the entire side of the rig. Make sure the valves are all shut off is a really good idea as well. Place a oilsorb blanket under the unit as about half cup of oil will run out when you take off the impeller cover.

The impeller doesn't have a right way wrong way for the vanes just try to get them all going in the same direction. Make sure the impeller tips have some oil on them when you insert it. Be carefull to get the cover gasket properly placed. Never try to use the old gasket. Screw it cover in place, put the cap on the hose threads, replace the side guard and ....

Presto Change' O clean up your bilge

These impellers do not last long ... the long skinny blades just loose the necessary stiffness to pump viscous fluid. I've never broken a vane, they just seem to stop pumping.

Yes, before the oil change.

Bring the engines up to operating temperature, then pull off the oil sample. If you are doing it as you change the oil, run about 1/2 the oil out of the crankcase, then take your sample from the discharge hose.

Reviving an old thread here, good timeless info....

Changed the oil yesterday which was a first for me, here is the write up.

I changed the oil in my engines and gen. I used Rotella T1 SAE 30. What I was hoping to be a 2 hour task turned into about 6. But a lot of unknowns doing it the first time added to how long it took.

6 gallons for the cats (may need +2 qts each as per specs, but with 6 gallons, the oil level is above the full line on the dipstick. Will run engines and monitor)

1 gallon for the gen

The guidance to warm the engines/oil is sound. The groco transfer pump worked great.....then the problems set in.

Add to the procedures posted above in this thread:
- warm the new oil before using the transfer pump.

I could only get about 10 secs out of the groco pump before the circuit breaker would blow. Took a lot longer than expected to get the oil back into the engines.

Here is a link to an initial transfer pump thread http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php?t=61630

I had two five gallon buckets from home depot with the sealable lids that I see to hold oil from one engine and the generator. I used the empty oil jugs from filling the first engine and gen to hold the oil from the second engine.

Pulled oil samples along the way and will send to Cat for analysis.

Here are 2 tips to speed the process along.

1. I rewired my pump with larger gauge wiring and installed a breaker ahead of the fuse. I increased the fuse size to the next size larger and changed it to a slow blow type of fuse. I have not since had the breaker trip as long as the oil is warm.

2. Buy your new oil in 5 gallon pails (Parman Oil out Charlotte is a good source) so you always have a ready supply of empties and besides, its easier to handle 2 5 gal pails than 3 cases of gallons. Then, put the oil in the engine room the night before you are going to change the oil and run the heater on the boat at 75 degrees.

My first time took a day to do fuel filters, oil and oil filters and change the transmission fluid. I'm down to about 4 hours.......not that I have practice.

They will arrange to drop off the oil at one of their customers near you at no cost. It will be at a parts house, a quick-lube store, service station, etc. They are doing you a favor by allowing Parman to drop it off there, so you need to go get it as soon as it arrives........a small inconvience. My daughter lives in Nashville so I usually just work about 6 months ahead and run by their warehouse and pick up my oil when we are in town for lunch.

Hello all, another Canadian here in BC. My Cat dealer is Finning and they shipped me 5 Gallon Cat SAE 40 with part number 7x-7840. I do see this part number on the Cat.parts site as an SAEO oil. I have a 2002 3126 motor and have always run 1 gallon SAEO 30 part number 170-5262. I told them marine engine and I need SAEO oil so not sure if 7x-7840 is perhaps right? The pale does not say SAEO which worries me. Any Comments? Thanks.

The Caterpillar product description for SAEO shows part # 7X-7840 as SAE-40 SAEO in a 20L metric package.

With your location, your temperature chart probably recommends SAE-30 instead of SAE-40…….you might check it and see. If SAE-30 is right for your temps, then #170-5262 is correct, but is a 1 gal part number.

Here is the product sheet for SAEO:

Thank you Frank. I will investigate 30 vs 40. You seem to otherwise agree what I have been shipped is an SAEO equivalent oil. It does not suggest that on the labeling shown on the pale. I too found that SAEO chart. I will report back if I learn anything new. Thanks again.

Hi I just saw your post and my oil rep told me the rotella T1 Sae 30 is a different formula than the rotella T Sae 30 and it doesn't meet cat specs

Re: Reverso Pump

For what its worth - I ran Rotella in all my trucks and skid steers (Chevrolet, Ford, Kubota diesels) and jugs of Rotella were commonplace in the shop, on the high mile trucks, etc. for constantly 'topping off' engines. I thought it was normal for diesels until a friend suggested that I run Mobil Delvac in the highest oil consuming engine I owned.

To my amazement, the consumption lessened by over 50%, and when I switched other low consumption engines, I no longer added between change intervals.

Rotella breaks down too easily under heat stress IMO, and marine duty is high heat stress. If you are adding...that is your proof.

I posted this a couple of years ago when CAT stopped endorsing Rotella due to Shell not testing to their standards. I use PetroCan Duron that meet CI-4 and CF-4 in a monograde 30 and 40 weight. I use the 40 weight and my engines do not burn any oil. That was not the story when I used Rotella and my exhaust was dirty. The PetroCan oil that meets the CAT specs is excellent. I buy it in 18 liter pails from the Petrocan bulkstation.

Time for an oil change...what are the acceptable oil that meets CF4 in 30w? local auto store has NAPA oil in 5 g pails that meet the spec. Any suggestions on sources?

Thanks.....Ed

Mobil Delvac 1630 meets the CF 4 spec...local price is $80/5 g pail or $64 for 4 x 4gal case

So picked up the 1630 and the label only states CF. The distributor called the tech center and got two different answers. First person said no, it does not meet and the second was almost sure it did in the if it claims CF it meets both 2 (two stroke) and 4 (four stroke). The CF 4 spec is obsolete per mobile and nothing replaced it. Distributor rep is still searching for answers.
