Oil for 3116TA Cats

Good suggestion about purging the oil change system with some new oil, Frank. My questions are now answered and I say THANKS to all!

I can hardly wait to do this little job... kidding!

Cheers,
Warren

I was wondering why there were 14 NMEA out plugs on that chartplotter tonight....

I've never used the Reverso oil changer, and this will be my first shot at it in a month or so.

I'm sure I'll figure it out, and I'll use the "flushing" tip alla FW.

One more Q.......Any thoughts on which is easier AND cleaner to work with...Gallon jugs or 5 gallon jugs?

A local distributor has both, and the $$/gallons is pennies different....$9.47/gallon by the 5 gallon jug or $9.65/gallon by the gallon jug (minimum 6 gallon purchase). They also sell cases of qts (12 per case) which works out to $10.03/gallon.

I find it easier to use the 1 gallon jugs. I use the Reverso to get the oil out but pour it back in one Gallon at a time. Like Frank, I use some sacrificial oil to ensure that I get all the old stuff out.

I use an old 5 gallon gas can to collect the used oil as I pump it out and the marina has an oil collection tank right on prem so its a no brainer....(at least for me).

Its sad to have to be talking about "winterization" projects with two plus months of good boating still ahead of us!

Do yourself a favor and make sure you have an extra impeller for that Reverso system before you use it. If a SINGLE blade breaks off, it will not move oil and you'll be sitting there kicking yourself for not having a spare. At least that's what I hear.... ;-)

You are dealing with 6.5 gal of new and used oil for each main engine plus one more for the generator. I much prefer working with 5 gal pails. Except for lugging them to the boat and into the bilge, they are much easier.

For me the big thing is the waste oil and being able to use the oil change pump to re-fill the engines. I keep 2 spare empty 5 gal buckets, so once I start pumping out an engine, I can keep going without the risk of spilling waste oil in the bilge when I switch containers for the old oil. Once you get the first engine empty, you pump 5 gal into it and then you have a bucket for the next engine and generator.

But, this one is a user's choice thing..........the only difference in the oil between gal and 5 gal put-ups is the cost--- 5 gal pails is a lot cheaper.

YOu can handle the pump.......put the hose in the bucket, open the valve and flip the switch!

Thanks:

Price isn't the issue....it's convience and mess that will be my driving force.

Genie needs 4 qts
engines need 26 qts each
total 56 qts. (14 gallons)

I'll probably buy 2 - 5 gallon jugs and a case of gallons.... that'll give me two gallon jugs left for next (season) change....

Local supplier:
1 - 5 gallon jug $47.35 ($9.47/gal)
6 - 1 gallon jugs $57.90 ($9.65/gal)
12- 1 Qt case $30.10 ($10.03/gal)

Where do I get an impeller for the Reverso?

I'm surprised at the low price differential. I saw this with someone else and figured it was because I buy from a large distributor who re-packages into gal and 5 gal pails from bulk so there isn't any freight involved.

I also find a good bit of the convenience factor to be in getting the stuff together that I need at the right time. For that reason, I stay at least a year ahead. I buy 6 pails of oil and a case of gallons at the same time, but I have space to keep the extra until next year. I have oil and fuel filters on hand as well. Onoce I use them, I just stop by the Cat dealer sometime when I'm in town (its 60 miles away for me) rather than making a special trip.

I get my impellers from boatfix.com for all the different systems on the boat including the Reverso.

Gary, how many oil changes did you get through before the reverso impeller went south on you?
I am seeing some gaps in my spares locker all of a sudden....

I've done 5 main engine oil changes and had to replace the thing 3 times now. I think it may be more along the lines of how long the thing sits idle in the pump rather than related to number of oil changes. Just do a google on "Reverso Impeller" and there are bunch of places that carry them.
