A first for me so thought I would share. Live in the north and my boat spends about 5 mos/year winterized under a well vented and framed tarp. I rinse it all off and leave a heater in the bilge for the first week to remove all moisture before Jack Frost sets in.
Anyway, oil and filters were changed early last Sept and winterized it mid Oct.. 31 hrs on it to date. Dug it out of 3' of snow and flashed it up today. New plugs and ran it for about 20 mins on muffs in the driveway. Ran like the day it was put away. Noticed the oil level had dropped to lower portion of the add range after doing so and a bit of oil in the bottom of a clean bilge. Turned out a small pin hole had developed at the bottom of the oil filter where there must have been a small blemish/scratch in the paint. Just a small bump of corrosion. Got lucky and caught it before heading out on the water. New filters will always be going on down the road after storage periods. Would have been a real crappy time to spin a main or throw a rod.

WOW that's interesting.

I hope you took some pictures and sent them to the filter manufacturer.

What brand and model number was your filter?

The filter was a Napa gold 1060. Believe Wix makes them. I use them on all my personal stuff and never an issue before. This is the only one in a salt water environment. This wasn't to bash a product but more to share what could have been a crappy outcome. Other than a small pimple of rust at it's lowest point when in the hull, the filter looks new. It is in the same spot a water drip would have been. For the price of a filter, will be sticking a new one on when pulling out of storage regardless of the dumping oil.
