Hello. I purchased a boat at the end of the summer that is titled to me and registered to me in Rhode Island. That is where the boat is currently being stored. The boat will be delivered to Cininnati in the spring. I need to get it registered in Ohio. There was no sales tax in Rhode Island. Does anyone know if I will have to pay Ohio Sales tax when I go to get an Ohio Title on the boat? The transfer of title at that point wont really be the result of a sale.

If I would be charged saes tax to transfer title, would I be better off getting CG Documentation on he boat while it is titled in RI? I don't believe I would need an OH title for registration if the boa is documented?

Yes, you will pay 7% sales tax in Ohio on the value of the boat or the price that you payed if recorded.

I don't think that there is any benefit to document vs. register. It used to be that if it were documented, you avoided the yearly renewal and tax fee. I don't believe that is the case anymore. Now it's just personal preference. If it's already documented, leave it that way. If it's registered, do what you feel is best for you.

Good luck and enjoy!

Cheers

You will have to pay Ohio sales tax or show proof you paid sales tax to Rhode Island (which you did not). I bought a documented boat in Indiana and nobody ever mentioned sales tax. I registered it in Ohio a year later and received a letter in the mail advising to pay them the sales tax or show proof I paid it to Indiana.

When you hear on the internet "you don't pay taxes on a documented boat" it is not true.

Thank you for the replies. I was planning on paying taxes and it was budgeted when we purchased. After reading the registration options in ohio I was hoping maybe I could avoid them through documentation if I didn't need a title. Doesn't sound like that is the case. I knew I would still have to register the boat in Ohio. I guess my next question would be...I think I got a great deal on the boat (according to the Inspection we paid about $15k less than it's value) but the value is not recorded on the RI title. Will I have to pay tax on the value or can I show them the bill of sale and pay tax only on the sale amount?

Even if you bought the boat new from a dealer....... and the dealer collected the tax....... these Ohio tax people walk the docks and send you a letter. Typical inept government system. I told them to look it up and refused to send them my sales contract. They were going to take me to court over it. This happened on 3 boats that I bought new. What a crosscheck system they must have. In Ohio, if you have a business, you can get a boat dealers license for $50.00 dollars and run boat dealers registration number (ZZ). See those everywhere. What idiots........the state that is.

I'm a little curious here.... if it is titled to you and registered to you in Rhode Island then I assume you own property or have an address in Rhode Island? Why not just keep it titled/registered in Rhode Island and continue to renew future registrations through Rhode Island? What is the desire to transfer this to Ohio?

Technically, that would be illegal... unless he takes it back to RI once every 6 months.

Whether or not Ohio would enforce it or not is another question, but if they did, it would be bad news.

In order to keep my boat registered in MI, I'm supposed to boat in Michigan Lake Erie waters every six months. There have been people(authorities), as of late, going to marinas to specifically look for out of state registrations.

I do not have property in RI. We purchased the boat there a few months ago and were not sure where the primary place of use would be and we were storing it in RI for the winter so we kept that registration. It is my understadng it should be reistered where it i primarily used/stored. We have decided to keep it at a Marina on the Ohio for the summers, so OH it is.

It is my understanding it should be registered where it i primarily used/stored.

Correct!

What marina are you thinking of?

Across the board I believe a boat should be registered in the state in which it is primarily used. An example of that is that in WI, MI, and Ohio, boats that are in their waters over 60 days are no longer transient, and expected to registered in the state. I think I’ve seen it phrased both ways, ‘over 60 days’, and ‘over 60 consecutive days’.

I’m registered in WI but slip in MI waters. Overall my boating is split between the two states, some years more equally than others. I’ve not been questioned on my registration yet but always figured it could happen.

Where does your 6 month comment come from? I don’t recall having ever seen that. Do you have a link to regs? If it was so, it would sure clear up my situation

Welcome to four seasons. Great marina. Look me up when you launch. - Patrick (b-dock captain)

Patrick, we are hoping for a single slip to open up on B dock but it looks like we might end up on D. I was looking in to the yacht club and sent an emal about membership information to the membership email. I hadn't heard back yet. Was are the membership requirements and fees?

Maybe it was 60 days.

The 4 seasons yacht club is a must. Tons of fun and great folks. Annual fee is $100 per family. Very inexpensive. Every month we have a themed dock party with dinner and open bar. Every Saturday free coffee and doughnuts. Parties and events! I will be happy to help you with the registration. Stop by when the season starts. D dock us a lot of fun. B dock is a brand new dock. D is being replaced this spring. B or D is a must.
