I was filling up yesterday and even though I knew better, I didn't have the fuel fill cap in my hand as I pulled the nozzel out of the fill and it cut the chain. Of course it went strait to the bottom.

I need a replacement, but I recall buying one at West Marine that was just slightly too large and wouldn't seat/seal. It might have been a Perko.

Here are the relavent part numbers

    1 1184746 DECK PLATE, DSL SS 2"W/1.5"OUTLET GRN CLR-COD
1437557 DECK PLATE, GAS CAP W/CHAIN

I think the cross refernce is a Attwood.

is this the right part??? There are a couple options.

Happened to us once, in our case, the water cap was the same size. Used that until I could order a replacement, heavy tape over the water fill. We have a spare on board now.

I didn't think to swap the water top. Great idea! I did cover it with electrical tape...all I had handy.

I ordered the one of Amazon hoping that's it.

Unfortunately, it rained like hell last night...

Happened to me about 4 years ago while fueling. I got super lucky, the itty bitty ship store had one, and it fit.

I should try and locate a spare. Neither of mine have the retaining chains so I'm really careful removing and replacing. I set them on the cockpit floor when I'm getting gas.

Omg….. are we a bunch of rookies?….. your only job is to get the fuel in the right hole and cap it…… and we have a thread on admitted failures?

What failure? .........he was testing the float dynamics.

Anyway we have a diver who goes down once a year and brings back up 20-30 that hit the bottom. The beaded chain is useless.

Exactly, false confidence, I switched to the spring clip with cable.

I did that once in the 80s filling up my parents boat at the fuel dock on Mackinaw Island.

Of course at 18 yrs old just dove down 15 ft to get it off the bottom! I'm still probably dumb enough to dive for it again...

What is this? Because the braided chain is crap. Damn nozzle cut it like butter. I was thinking of making some ss braided cable instead.

Of course you have to get the screw that holds the chain out and back in with out dropping it in the tank.

Happens all the time. I have a Y spring clip with thin cable. The spring clip comes out when fueling but saves the slip when getting the cap off. I'll try and find what I have. I replaced mine when I first got the boat and couldn't find a new cap that fit.

EDIT: I have four of these: https://www.amazon.com/Release-Lanyard-Stainless-Hardware-Plastic/dp/B09TGNKNRS

With four of these type spring, but not from here: Just a shot of the Y spring: https://www.univair.com/atlee-dodge...JvYo-BRr6MILLDGvi_fQEap1yIrofD28aAoptEALw_wcB

The replacement I got is a spring clip that goes down the hole and the cap is attached with a SS cable.

I just leave the cap off, that way I cannot lose it.

If you find the right part can you post the part number. Seems like I should have a spare on board.

I pulled in to fuel at a marina on lake tenkiller, and the young man running the fuel pump dropped mine in, funny thing is the chain was intact the last time i put fuel in, it must have broke just as he took the cap off. The owner of the marina happen to see him drop it, and said they just sold his last one the day before. So he had his hand go pull the one off of his boat to put back on mine. Which reminds me I need to order the correct cap before boating season

I ordered the one shown above, so I will post up if it’s the right one. I do know the one I bought and tried a couple years ago from WM didn’t fit.

But doing to try and run down some of of these Y clips, as I never trusted the little ball chains on the caps. Where the fuel fills are located on a downward sloping and outboard, any slip up and the damn think is gone. There’s got o be a better way.

maybe aI should look at new fuel fills with a captive cap.

Does anyone know where to source a replacement O-ring for these?

Once I get the right cap, I'll measure up the o-ring and post that as well. I know I've purchased new o-rings for these at the local hardware store and they are cheap.
