Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Thanks
So if I want to check for pieces of an old impeller it would be there.
Thanks
Wow changed starboard impeller
Not fun at all lol

Did you take the exhaust off? That helps

I plan on replacing the entire pump assembly this winter and doing it on the bench.

The side that has the raw water pump attached is just sea water the other side is both. However, you need to drain down anti freeze to remove either cap because the caps both hold the core in place.
Do you have to drain it all the way down or a gallon or two

Hello all
Figured out my engine starting procedure operator error mostly
Another question as I am noticing a little soot on the stern and am wondering with my twin 3116s where my turbo starts to boost
Does anyone have a chart that would show typical boost pressures vs rpms
Also fuel usage most efficient boat speed/rpm
Am adding sensors for fuel usage and boost pressure in the near future

I have taken both Hx caps off without draining any coolant at all a multiple of times on my 3116 engines. Just make sure that the engines have cooled completely and the coolant system has no pressure on it, leave the fill cap on then carefully remove the bolts on the cap, remove the cap the reinstall a couple of the bolts so the core doesn't come unseated from it's sealing O-ring. You can then clean both raw water sides of the core. If you need to remove the core then that for sure requires the coolant to be drained down.

if you have a local dealer service contact they can share sea trial data that has some of that info. Its apples to oranges but as an example our 350HP 3126 PAR data is below. It shows min/max but necessarily pressure at cruise.

I have mechanical boost gauges and notice significant (meaning more than 1-3psi) boost around 1950 RPMs

Sooting can be as simple as intake restrictions like a fouled air cleaner or dirty aftercooler. Have you cleaned the filters recently?

Well I’m very Anal and have a lot of time
Dremel with little wire brush
Small wire brushes
Toothbrushes
Long Q-tips
Air compressor to blow out dust/rust
Masking tape
Acetone
Brake cleaner
Aluminum foil to wrap hoses so no overspray
I have never used a degreaser.

see below... how would you attemp to clean these up.. I have all new decals and engine ID placards I would like to get a clean uniformed look.. I have access to fillers, epoxy etc.

Neal - I sent mine to a powder coater and he sandblasted and redid them. I applied the new decals. Looked brand new...
Thank you Carter.. I am sure its easy enough to remove the covers..

are you bringing the boat south this winter?

Thanks all for the good data
I have checked the air filter and it appears fine
The indicator backs that up as well
Responses that I won’t see appreciable boost until ~1900 rpms May be some of my issues as I am putting around @1500 rpms.

I ran for almost 4 hours at 1300 the other day and had nearly no sooting from the mains (the gen can leave a bit if it's not loaded)

I'm sure boost varies on the boat, rated HP, conditions, etc., since boost is a direct result of load. Is the sooting a new problem?

I also had my Heat Exchanger shells sandblasted and powder coated. They had some rust damage on them from water dripping through the hatch opening. They came back looking awsome! I'm going to do the same to my aftrecooler covers. I think the closest white powder coat I could find was Arctic White.

When I start this project.. ( after hurricane season in case I need to move her) I will look at all items that can be done.. I am so embarrassed by the engine room right now.. plan on repairing gel coat damage and recoat with bilge coat ( would love to do in alwgrip white) paint the long exhaust tubes.. replace hoses and clamps 6inch stuff.. add strip LED lighting for more coverage and light

not sure on the genny yet I do want to go to a larger muffler for sure. But cleaning and painting the genny looks tough to do correct...
probably start in Nov when service is due on all the engines...
