Winter storage and update time. I actually don't mind this time of the season. I get to do the little things to clean up the boat. Just swapped out the bow locker cam latches and transom locker latches to stainless as opposed to the 22 year old chalked white latches.
Something to do to spruce the old girl up a bit. :)

Getting ready to do my yearly oil/filter change. CAT filters of course....but anyone have thoughts on oil?
Was thinking about using Shell Rotella T4 15 w 40? I am running Cat 3196 motors....Tractor Supply carries it in 5 gallon pails for $84.99.

When I had my 450 Sundancer with cat 3126 motors I couldn't use a multi-viscosity oil due to deposits in after coolers.....

You may already have this info but see page 58 https://www.sbmar.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Caterpillar-Owners-Manual.pdf

In this picture, you have 2 cockpit air-condition controls outside of the small cabinet door to the right. Mine is inside the cabinet....and I only have one. is this an aftermarket modification?
Yes this is definitely an aftermarket install. Although both units are wired to one breaker on the 240 panel, they operate independently.

I was thinking about moving my controls out of the cabinet and to the location where yours is, hate having to reach into that cabinet to control the AC unit. Was yours originally mounted inside the cabinet….and why now 2 units?

No, the boat didn't come with cockpit AC from what I have read in all of the paperwork that came with the boat, a previous owner had it installed. There are some tell tale signs other than the paperwork I have that shows it being purchased and installed some time ago. 1. There isn't a return air grill behind the helm seat. 2. The control isn't in the cabinet as most 510's are. 3. The 240 breaker is only labeled accessory and not cockpit AC. 4. The vents aren't where they should have been installed had this been a factory unit.

No big deal, it works great and I don't mind the 2 controllers. Sometimes we don't need them both on. :)

Another project off the punch list: I swapped out the brass plates, knobs and rosettes for chrome. We really like the look and makes feel a bit fresher.

The door handles were the tougher items to locate. Flounder Pounder wanted me to buy the entire handle set at $273.00 each. No BUENO!! After the usual Lowes and Home Depot strikeouts I decided to stop in to a local window and door supplier for residential and commercial homes/developments. The door handles on the boat have the exact same shaft that most French patio doors have. After a few minutes with their service guy checking the shop, they came out with 8 handles as shown. The BEST part was that they only wanted $15.00 a handle! DEAL!!!!

Looks good! Like the door handles, they look good. What do you plan to do with the old hardware?

Thanks!

I was contemplating putting it on EBay, or offering it up for sale on CSR. Of the 58 knobs I replaced only 55 are available as the other 3 were so locked on to the stem that they twisted off and I had to order new locks. Otherwise they all look really good and are the solid brass knobs and rosettes versus the plastic.

Rolling through the winter punch list!!! This upgrade was for the Admiral. :)

Disconnected the galley sink drain line that goes to the sump and added a new line to direct it overboard bypassing the sump. This makes it so much easier to do dishes and rinse things without pushing so many food particles into the sump. No more spaghetti sauce issues (LOL) or worrying about how to rinse the plates etc. A very easy project and it makes life nicer when we are finished with all the cooking and clean up.

I put a cap on the end of the original sink drain line to the sump to protect against any unwanted odors and tucked it down below the new one in case the next owner wants to put it back inline.

That’s a great mod….the sink is the only thing that really clogs up my sump. I’m cleaning it every few months. Can you share the parts you used?

You betcha!!
From Fisheries supply.com I ordered the hose and 2 cuffs. I only used 2' of hose but better safe than sorry!!

I ordered the thru hull from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IV8JUW?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

A tube of 4200 and some epoxy to seal the 2" hole after you drill it out.

The hull in that area is 1" thick and the thru hull fitting just fit. I could get about 5 full turns on the nut and let the 4200 do the rest. I did need to cut the "cuff" back a little bit where it attached to the thru hull. The turn in that compartment was too hard to get the full length of the cuff on to the barbs.

After you access the hull area from the inside under the sink, my measurements from the interior deck to my drill point was 7-1/4" up. I drilled an 1/8" pilot hole to see where it came out and made sure I wasn't into my stripe. I then went to the outside and drilled the actual 2" hole so I was just above the silver stripe. The 1/8" pilot hole was about 1/2" too high.

I wouldn't recommend going any lower as the access on the interior gets really tight if you get too low. The bend on the hose probably won't take anymore if you were to go lower. Also, it was tough enough to get the hose and the cuff on where it was. I needed a heat gun to soften it up a bit to get it on and clamp it. Get a rubber 1-1/2" pipe cap with clamp from your hardware store to place on the old hose to seal it off from any odors down the road.

All in all, a really easy mod that I did to my 460 a few years back and was really appreciated by the better half. I call this a 2 beer job! It just takes time for the epoxy to dry and 4200 to set up before I pushed the hose on. (So technically 2 beers and a cocktail for wait time) ;) Feel free to message me with any more questions.

Hi All,
Any help would be appreciated. When I turn on the nav lights none of the gauges light up. I can push the dimmer up/down but still nada. Any chance the dimmer module went bad? I took the panel out to see if I could insert new bulbs but these are closed gauges. My last boat had a lamp mount and I could put new led bulbs in them but not these.

Thoughts?

I don't recognize those gauges but the dimmer module is highly suspect. Got any pics of your switches?

I will get some tonight as I do have the switch panel open currently. I just learned that they are Kysor Medallion gauges.

Here are a couple pics. The dimmer module is the center black box. The light blue wire isn't connected to anything and I cannot find a loose wire that should be in the terminal. A little baffling on that aspect.

Four Sea Blaze X2's.

Does anyone know what these Deutsch connectors are for behind the gauge panel? Obviously they are part of the CAT EMS system, but what information can come from them if a device is connected. My CAT mechanic has no idea what they are for.
