OFFICIAL - 450DA Owner's Thread****

I bought some white nylon fittings at a TSC store then turned the right diameter on my lathe. I never likes the hunk of tubing sticking out look so I turned a bell shaped end on the extensions while they were in the lathe. The idea is to give the water a point to drip from away from the hull. The extensions only stick put about 5/8" so from 10 ft away they look like part of the thru hull.

Clear tubbing from West Marine. And a white corrugated flex hose for the bow. Also something on the side where the center cleats are. I think was was called something X. Worked like a champ!!

Wiper arms for 1997 450DA

Anybody have source and or pictures of the wiper arms on our 450DAs?

On mine the wiper arm f
its onto a splined shaft of the wiper motor and there is a set screw to keep the arm from popping off the shaft. However on my boat both the wiper motor splines and the wiper arm splines are stripped. And somewhere in the boat's past someone used the set screws too much and now the motor splines have a groove cut into them.

As if that isn't enough, the port side wiper has a 1/2" in diameter spline while on the starboard side the spline is closer to 1/4" in diameter. I think. Because the starboard side wiper is missing entirely so I don't know if there is some kind of adapter or if it really is a 1/4" spline.

On a positive note both wiper motors and sprayers work well.

So if you could share part numbers and photos that will allow me to M
acGyver some kind of solution to my missing/won't stay on windshield wipers.

Unfortunately, if both the male shaft splines and the wiper arms are stripped, you are going to have to replace both. There is no work around that will last past the first rain storm.

The wiper arm is a standard adjustable pantograph arm. There are 2 std sizes......I'll measure mine if I go to the marina tomorrow.

I can't help you on the wiper motor. On the 450DA the motor is located beneath the salon headliner. The headliner will have to be pulled down far enough to remove the old ones. Be extremely careful so the the headliner doesn't stretch. It is 20 years old and has dried out some to it isn't going to be very elastic and will stretch easily. Read between the lines here: changing the wiper motor is simple mechanical stuff, but get professional help with the headliner.

Good luck with it.......

Frank,

Yes please to photographs and measurements. With one wiper missing and a different size spline i'm left scratching my head as to the original design.

Chapter 2…………….

I am not going to the boat until next week, but I looked up the wiper arms we used…….I replaced mine last October when one broke. Here is the arm, but not the source, although I don't have a problem with Defender, we just ordered them thru the marina from a distributor to save freight and get overnite delivery:

These are a universal arm (was the OEM item since mine were original) and it described as 17-22". This has nothing to do with the wiper blade size…..which are 18" blades.

THe motor is described in the Sea Ray parts book as SR part number 129084 - "85˚ wiper motor". YOur moron drive is stripped so you will have to replace the motor assembly, unless the manufacturer has a repair kit of some sort. If you cannot wait until you pull t he head liner down to get the motor make and model off one of your wiper motors, you can contact Sea Ray Customer Service and explain that you are looking for a replacement wiper motor and ask them to look up the vendor and vendor model number on their system for you. Even if it shows N/A in their inventory, ask for the vendor info so you cant source it on your own.

One of my wipers was popping off the stud, so I drilled a hole thru the wiper & stud and then put a rolled pin in the hole.... That was 8 years ago.

I believe you will find AM Equipment will have everything to replace components or the entire system. They are/were one of Sea Ray's OEM suppliers. I was able to source all of the parts for the 400DA there.

Was the system really built with different size knurled drums?

No…..my boat was not. I just replaced both of the pantograph arms because one broke, they were identical and the knurled pieces the arms fit on were the same size.

I got sick of reaching behind the helm constantly so threw mine in the bin and replaced with a SPEICH stainless wiper setup with variable speed controls.
its brilliant in all conditions especially drizzle and intermittent spray.
includes new wiper motor, pantograph arms and control module which fits right on dash where existing controls are.

My icemaker does not work. How much is it supposed to produce?
Has anyone replaced their ice maker with something else? Mine does not work and honestly i don't have any real use for it. Is there a refrigerator that is an easy replacement? I also don't have a good place for a trash can.

I installed a "beverage center" in place of the cockpit icemaker. Far more useful. Check out my link to the Chez-nous Facebook page. The link is somewhere earlier on this thread.9

The gauges are individually wired with screw terminals. However, there is a wiring harness for the upper gauge cluster that will allow you to remove the entire upper panel, tuck it under your arm and take it home with you or to a convenient work bench somewhere and change the gauges out at your leisure, instead of standing bent over the steering wheel in an uncomfortable crouch. Changing the gauges is easy if you do it one at a time and mark the wire locations.

The lower switch panel can be a bear if you get going too fast. The switches must be unwired then removed from the panel, reinserted in the new panel and finally rewired. Take your time and label every wire you remove. It isn't difficult, but is a little tedious.

Thanks Frank. I'm going to buy all new gauges and switches.

Frank,
I'm also going to install at least a new chartplotter. Is there a way to interface engine data on a 1996 3126? I'm leaning towards Raymarine 12" axiom or E125/127.
