Official 390 E.C. Thread

Those teak strips are a nightmare. Once the bedding under the strips fails, water seeps through the screw holes. When I bought the boat, all of the coring here was gone (not rotted- just gone with a big void between the laminates).

I should have replaced with a solid piece as you've done. If I ever have to remove the windlass again, I'm going to do it. In the meantime, a ton of caulk...

Not counting the screws and/or bolts for the misc. hardware, etc. there were 52 screws holding down all of the slats. I have filled all of them and I will be sealing the underside of the nice shiny new varnished teak board before I set it in place to keep all moisture out.

Ken,

Here's the pics you requested in the other thread, along with some of the interior...

Hope this helps.

Re: More Questions!

based on all that has been posted, I am off to make those changes in the spring!

I will probably add a windlass to it for the anchor....how bad was it to get the wiring run thru to the console?

Great Pictures and lots of ideas for me! i just bought the boat this fall and only had it a month when it had to come out and go into storage so I have lots of work to do.

I really liked what you did with the console. I have been looking at what I can do since most of what is in there is all orginal gauges and some do not work well. \

Can you elaborate on what it took to redo that? Is this all work that you manufactured yourself or is some of it purchased? that question applies to the console and what you did with for example the sliding door into the cabin.

Again great pictures!

Again, great pictures. Went back and looked because we have another area that we want to fix up. The floor in the cabin area is in pretty bad shape. It has the carpet on one side and the tile like floor in the galley area. there are two hatches in the floor for storage.

What did you do on the floor in the salon?

You have a capstan now, correct? Just remove the old capstan and replace with your new windlass. I disconnected the old deck foot switch and installed the newly supplied breaker & relay in place of the old breaker in the engine room. You will then install the new up/down switch at the helm and run a low voltage wire from there down to the new relay in the ER. You will now be controlling the windlass from the helm. There is an optional up/down deck foot switch available for my new Lewmar Pro Fish 1000. There was no wiring to run from the windlass to the helm!

Thanks for the accolades :).
I knew when I bought the boat that the console/dash had to go. Back "in the day" they didn't have the electronics we do now and there was no room to mount anything. This got better on the later 390's, but in '85 it was dismal.

First step was to determine how tall I could build it without obstructing visibility over the bow. In reality, there's just a very thin slice of the windhsield anyway that gets looked through when seated. Then it was just a matter of seeing if I could fit everything I wanted into that space. I couldn't, but I did end up with enough space for most of it.
I decided to set the new gauges in a removeable panel to provide access for wiring the electronics behind.

I'm no furniture maker, but I've got decent carpentry skills (I'm a contractor ). The new helm and the seat bases (mine were plywood and rotted- later 390's went to fiberglass) I built from 1/2" Okoume plywood to the same dimensions as the original bases. Epoxied them all together, several coats of high build epoxy primer, then sprayed with Interlux Perfection. They look better than I expected, my mechanics thought they were fiberglass.

The only things I had custom made were the Starboard ladder-back bench seats and the large baitwell in the cockpit.

Once you gut the cockpit of the 390- which is really pretty simple to do- you have a wide-open "clean slate" to build her to whatever you want. It's really a versatile boat. As you can see mine is rigged for serious fishing, but can be set up for anything.

The hardwood in the galley is Thomasville Jatoba sold at HD. Fortunately for me, the entire interior had been recently redone by the PO. Just like a new boat, but 1/5 the cost!

Have fun getting there

thanks again!

I have saved all the pictures and am going to get started. I just bought the boat right before the end of the season and have a lot of work to do on it.

Upgrading electronics is going to be one of the first things. Need to get tacks and fuel gages working so to replace them wanted to redo the dask and I like what you did with it.

And of course my wife has got the cushions out of the salon and they are out to be redone and recovered already.

going to make a new mattress for the stateroom since the old one is well old....after i fix the water leak from the anchor line locker...

If there are any other tips or suggestions you might have, all will be appreciated. Since I mentioned my wife a couple of times..this is not a fishing boat..:smt018...I have friends that I can go do that with!

thank you!

:smt100 Another Question!

We need to replace the screens on the hatches. It looks like the ones that were there were home made using double sided velcro tape.

I was trying to see in the one picture what you have in there. is that something you fabricated or something you were able to purchase somewhere?

Thanks again!

We got rid of the original crappy foam mattress & replaced it with (2) 3" king size memory foam mattresses. We used the old egg crate topper for a pattern and cut out the new foam with an electric carving knife. The bed is odd shaped, so we used spray contact glue to fill in a few corners with the off cuts. It is now very comfy.

Den,

Not sure what you're looking at, but I had the same "homemade" looking velcro screens on mine (so, maybe they weren't homemade after all?) but removed them. It was just too much of a PITA to remove/replace them whenever the hatch was to be opened.

Reality is, that here in FL they're not opened much. Most of the year it's just too hot, so the a/c is running. I did have some Sunbrella covers made for them, which keeps the interior cooler during the heat of the day. They also keep the hatches themselves out of the sun and prolongs their life.

There are some really nice (and pricey!) retractable screen shades available:

I have a question, and I hope this is the right place to ask.I just bought a 1989 390 express. She handles the river great.I havent taken her out to the bay yet,not sure what the range of the 7.4 gas engines is yet.I really love this boat and I want to some cosmetic work on the interior.Im missing a cabnit doors and the area wear in the forward stateroom is missing a panel,so the anchor chain is exposed.Does anybody have any ideas for replacement interior items.Ive had no luck on line searching.
thanks

My anchor locker does not have doors, but it does have sliding mirrors.

getting to be that time in the Northeast and starting to get things ready for my first full season!

question on anodes.

I am looking to add aluminum anodes to the shafts and replace what is on the trim tabs. I know the shaft is 1.5 inches in diameter so I am good with that.

the anodes on the trim tabs not so sure what to use. They appear to come in different sizes. the obvious question is " does size matter?" Is bigger better?

Thanks in advance for the help!

As i think someone else pointed out, mine has sliding mirrors there too. While you are back there, be sure to check for moisture. I had a problem with mine where it was building up moisture there and channeling it down to underneath the mattress. It was a series of problems from the drain being plugged to the leaky teak boards on the bow pulpit.

Hi everyone! Thanks to Pietro for showing me the thread (Pietro, good luck getting her ready soon!). I read through the thread really quick because I have to get off to work. I to, had/have the moisture problem. One thing I did that may or may not be good is i pulled all the anchor line out and put it in a cooler of water and bleach, then power washed it, then sprayed a bleach/water combination in the anchor box. Also purchased an electrostatic air cleaner for the forward berth. That seems to have done the trick. (I leave the aircleaner off while sleeping, somthing about electrons that i don't understand). I did notice that in heavy weather, the windows in the fwd berth leak, so that is high on the priority list, as is the removal of the wood under the windlass (otherwise known to the girlfriend and I as the cutting board). Last year, out of 157 day's in the slip, I slept on it 150, so, needless to say, I can't wait to get back there with all the boating friends. If anyone is ever near Rochester, look me up, I dock right next to a gas dock (that also serves as a transit dock) It's good to be here!

Moisture from the anchor locker is a problem... having a rope is probably worse...
I suggest to get rid of the wood rods under the windlass and replace them with one piece of wood as I did (page 4 of this thread).
Moreover I have decided to put a little Nicro mini vent next to the windlass
