Official 380 Thread

I am not familiar with this system....but I would imagine there would be a check valve in plumbing just in case the inlet cap came off. Maybe the check valve is bad. If there is no water in the engine oil...start with the plumbing in the flush system.

Updates continue, I installed a new fusebox along with an access point bridge, linksys ac1900 using a diy raynet adapter to install cameras, I am using cat 5 power injectors. I am using cheap Chinese cameras that are compatible with the Axiom. I ran cat 5 and I will have 2 in the engine room hardwired and 1 on the spoiler underneath oval used for a backup camera. And several more wirelessly. Affordable way to add many cameras.

Those curious about the Raymarine light house maps here is a side by side with navionics, not bad for 50 bucks, I like the redundancy if one does not have accurate info or expires. But, I like navionics better.

I never know which thread my 38 belongs to but anyway a few pics of the annual outside maintenance, enlarged trim tabs and new underwater lights.

Just lifted - has been in the water for 16 months. Micron 66 worked great - hull was quite clean although I had been doing a bit of coastal cruising - only had a diver go down once back in November.

View attachment 48654

In the shade shelter ready for work to start - hull has been acid washed at this stage.

View attachment 48655

New enlarged tabs (now 26 x 15.5 with 3 inch drop fins), new underwater lights, new Micron 66 (sprayed) and Propspeed. Although not shown I also installed a 5 blade bow thrust prop (Q-prop) from Side Power.

View attachment 48656

Compound and polish using the Dulon system - gelcoat chips all fixed. Ready for another 16 to 18 months in the water unless I pull earlier for new Veem props. I'll keep the topside more regularly maintained having just bought myself some polishing equipment and pads.

Hi

like to ask you some feedback about your bigger tabs. I recently purchased a 2006 38 DA and I’m finding it rides bow high even at 3600-3700 Rpm. I have a AB 10 feet tender with console and 20hp that is adding weight and recently installed 4 double AGM batteries for house banks that is adding a lot of weight as well.

Did you upgraded the tabs for better lift or fuel efficiency ? Do you find any change at all since the Upgrade ?

We find that it’s hard to see above the bow when sitting in the middle cockpit and driver seat

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Phil

Interesting, we are equipped similarly with a Ohlsen Davit and a Walker Bay Super Tender with a 20 HP Tohatsu and a console. We have 7 batteries aft and 2 up front.

We can level the boat very easily. It would be a bother to not be able to see over the bow and seems like the fuel efficiency would not be helped by "pushing". We have to be able to see forward well as there are lots of logs and debris in the water up here.

Maybe check and see if the trim tabs are working correctly. Easy enough to see from the dock.

Cheers!

thanks Bruce, we have verified that and they work fine, we get on plane easily but would like the bow down a bit more so we can see more water without having to stand up.

I also notice I have to change my water line to reflect the heavier back.
Felt like I could use more tabs but I go full down and still I feel it could go down

i get 19-20 knots at 36-37 rpm

I’m curious to see what the upgraded trim tabs jaggernaut ended up doing on performance and now attitude.

The larger tabs made a big difference to the attitude of the boat at all speeds. The main difference was around the 10 to 12 knots speeds where the original tabs were useless as this is the speed the boat was transitioning to plane - now it is dead flat and gained 2 - 3 knots at the same throttle as the boat is no longer ploughing.

I also installed the Mente Marine auto trim tab controller and had an inch of pitch added to the props as the motors were previously over revving. At 3500 i am doing around 19 to 20 knots and at 3700 around 22 to 23 knots. I tend to cruise at these speeds, weather and swell permitting, and my fuel burn is down compared to pre the changes made to the tabs and props.

Thanks a lot for the information. That Auto trim tab also makes total sense and I am glad to profit from your experience.

Are you carrying a tender? I wonder if I shouldn't even go a bit bigger than 26x 15.5?
was that size recommendation made by Bennet?

The Mente Marine trim tab controller is one of my favourite mods made to the boat. It also has indicators showing what each tab is doing.

At 20 knots the tabs are hardly deployed so I'm not sure you'll need bigger tabs but that would depend on the weight of your tender etc.

I only carry a tender when on trips and it is stored on the bow. It's a Achilles 2.9 metre ply floor tender so not heavy. Yamaha 8hp 2st is stored in the left hand side transom locker.

The original size tabs are undersized compared to Bennet specs for a boat of this size although I can't specifically recall their recommended sizing. As you will discover you can't really go wider because of the chine, unless you reposition the tabs further inboard. Bennet doesn't recommend going bigger than a 12 inch chord but I had to, to obtain the tab area needed.

I recommend replacing the Bennet tab fittings at the same time as the the 14 year old fittings will likely break with additional load. My old ones did eventually break, but haven't had a problem since replaced. And here is why I didn't go a larger chord out of concern for the load on the fittings. Although, I have found larger tabs are not needed on my boat as there is plenty in reserve. I only fully deploy them if I am doing constant 10 to 12 knot speeds where the originals had no effect.

I’m in touch with Bennet and they are actually recommending wider span same chord 12” but I hate to have to reposition the piston, your idea seems great and easier to upgrade. I just hope it will give me enough lift to compensate for the extra load. I will talk to them about that.

I already ordered the ACS from menta marine. That device sounds fantastic, thanks for the lead.

10-12 knots on plane and efficient is an ideal way to travel, I can’t do more than 8-9 in the whole unless spending tons on gas,

hopefully I can achieve these numbers with new mods

Yep, Bennet doesn't recommend a chord greater than 12 inches as I guess reliability becomes an unknown for each application. I believe there main concern was backing down with the tabs deflected would load the top of the tab with water pressure and cause a failure. With the Mente Marine trim tab controller in auto mode this is not a problem as the controller retracts the tabs at wake speeds.

Prior to Tabmans passing, he also suggested another set of tabs between the prop tunnels.

Impressed for a 25$ camera. Going to install 2 on the track vision array and two in the engine room this one in the cockpit. Was able to extend the axiom network wirelessly. I will update when installed, had to order cameras from UK now that Chinese companies are black listed.

Does anyone have info on a cruiseair SXM thermostat? On one of mine the temperature keeps going up to 99deg and the other none of the buttons seem to work am I able to use a hous style thermostat in its place or do I have to go back with the cruiseair/dometic ? If I can use one like I have at home I want to get one with wifi so I can contol it when I am not at the boat

Use these guys. They take your core and return a fixed panel.
I used them twice.

what @370Dancer said. Can not be a house style stat, need to be the proprietary stat that was made for it

I have received the mente ACS and installed it very easily wow. Work well although I haven’t sea trialed it yet. Can’t wait. Thanks

tabman would suggest between the prop tunnel ?

Do you know where ? See picture I drew red or yellow markings

Probably an old question but I removed the salon tv over the refrigerator and want to replace it with more storage. Looking for ideas. Photos will help me convince the boss! Thanks to all.

Any tips to getting that old original TV out? I have a 2000 and it's a late winter project.

The previous owner put doors to match the interior and I use it for my booze cabinet. Most beer, white wine and mixes are in the cockpit fridge that replaced the icemaker.

I works well to prevent sobriety!!! Except when at the helm. Dead sober, no exceptions!!

Cheers!
