Rain water intrusion

Has anyone encountered rain water entering the forward cabin, running down the port side, and pooling below the drawers that are also the steps to the port side of the berth?
Needs to be a real gully washer for it to happen, and we've had a few of those this summer, what with hurricanes and all.
As it pools under the step/drawer, it then seeps through the gap between the cabinet and the floor, and soaks the carpet from the berth back to the door to the head. I can see the trail of water coming from the vertical inside of the hull but have not been able to locate the source.

So far,
I have re-caulked the topside of the rub rail (will do the bottom side this week to rule out
I have re-caulked the fixed portholes (did not re-bed them yet)

Here's a couple of pics of the cabinet where the water is pooling.

Re: Rain water intrusion

If this only happens with a strong rain...
Have you considered looking at the water tank fill cap and seal?
My other thought would be the port nav light.

Phil,
Earlier I posted that I too was having this gas smell problem on fill ups. Well I confirmed that the overflow hose was secure and in good shape (via the access hatch on the starboard side rear birth upper shelf), but while I was in that hatch I noticed that I could see back into the engine bilge from this access hatch. I then went back and checked the starboard tank fuel gauge sending unit gasket. Sure enough, the gasket was old and cracked and leaking a little fuel on fill ups. The fumes were traveling into the cabin via that poorly sealed access hatch in the rear birth. Franky there wasn't a seal on that hatch at all, just 8 screws holding the wood cutout down.
Now that I have replaced the sending unit gasket the smell hasn't come back all summer. I'd also recommend putting a foam tape on the access panel to prevent any fumes or gases from entering the living compartment again.

best of luck

Hey Folks.
Anyone ever had an issue with a lingering gasoline smell. A few weeks ago I topped off my tanks, approx. 75 gal each P & S, and for the 1st time added some West Marine stabilizer. Several days later we were on the boat doing this & that and there was a distinct gas smell in the cabin and cockpit. Couldn't see any gas in the water or bilge even after giving the bilge a light wash down and pumping the water out and I don't see any leakage/wetness around the fuel pumps or filters. I've let the engine compartment and cabin air out over several days and it's a lot less but sometimes noticeable after the boat is closed up for several days. Sometime I don't smell anything but my wife does. Haven't taken it out yet due to crappy weather and winds but I've run the engines several times.

Anyone ever had any small point of corrosion at any joint, corner or other place that might have penetrated the tank wall causing a leak? My next step to be safe is to get my mechanic or someone with a gas sniffer/leak detector (if that exists) to poke around. Lots of luck if there's a leak way up towards the bow. There's no reason my tank vents would be clogged but haven't checked.

Any idea comments would be appreciated.

Phil

Re: Rain water intrusion

Check your nav light, ours had a missing seal between the lens and base. We put caulk between the lens and the base and the leak stopped.

I realize this post is old and you might not have the boat still but is there any chance you can remember where you found the Taylor made camper back for it?

GREAT thread........ This is our 4th season with our 1995 370DA....and we love it. Just the right size for the two of us. Handles great on plane and around the docks with gas motors. We've had a 280DA...310DA....330DA....but the 370DA is our favorite

Heres a few mods I've done over the years.

....added a cockpit flat screen TV/DVD player.

cockpitTV2001.jpg

.....installed a Taylor Made FASTBACK camper.

camperback001.jpg

.....new bar faucet and s/s cup holders.

security002-1.jpg

along with a few other goodies.....like central vac system.......new cockpit carpet....all new canvas.

This winter project will be to upgrade both old TV's with new flat screen units.

A friend has a 1995 370DA with a burnt up Westerbeke back end. He needs to remove the gen. What's the trick on this boat? Will it slip out aft of the motor, or does the exhaust system on the stbd motor have to come out.

Thanks!

I removed mine a few years ago to give the Genny a good overall servicing. I removed the exhaust manifold and hoses on the starboard engine, unbolted it, disconnected the wires and hoses to the Genny and the marina lifted it right out of the boat. My boat has a different engine hatch configuration because it is a '98 than the earlier 370's, so YMMV. You might have to removed some supports for the hatches to hoist it out.

I have a friend that has one of those on a 380, might be the same one if you can find the sizing chart. He's getting new canvas over the winter. Might be available. Tan.

Potted that up even though it looked pretty good (replaced them about 3 years ago), and we've had a couple of monsters the last few days. That's not it. It's really far forward on the port side. I have disassembled the cabinetry in the port clothes locker so I could see the water fill pipe, and watch for streaks of water down the inner hull. During really hard rain, where the water did accumulate under the steps drawer, there is NO evidence of water coming from anywhere between the A/C vent on the port side and the shower.
I have a Harbor Freight inspection camera with a 36" extension. I have run it as far up the hull liner as I can, and still haven't detected any water beyond a vertical corner that feeds the area pooling under the step drawer. I can't see beyond that. Starting to think about the anchor windlass taking water, but that should go out the drain in the locker. Still puzzled.

A couple of years ago, I rebed the hatches. One came off like the gasket wasn't sealing. The hatch in the head could have water coming in from there. Could the water run down the outside of the fiberglass between the bulkhead where the closet and drawers are and the head?

I'm with you, but that doesn't explain the water coming from the forward part. It all gets wet once the water is on the floor, which makes it hard to pinpoint it, but my gut still says forward, not aft of the drawer. I did shove the camera up the wall behind the shower liner, and still didn't see any indication of water. I'm sure I am not seeing everything, though. Hard to control once the camera goes into a small space.
If I could, I'd sit in it for every storm, but alas, there is no cash flow associated with that activity, so I must spend time elsewhere.

Re: Rain water intrusion

Has anyone tried to update/replace the coffee maker on the 90s model 370? I'm in the process of updating all things in the cabin and the coffee maker seems to really date the galley. Would love to have a newer looking coffee maker but only thing I've come up with is to just make it storage...

Actually, this is a bit funny to me. I,absolutely love the coffee maker in our 95. The coffee from it is the best we have all year! To each theor own, but I don't care if it's outdated!

i guess you put whatever fits and what you like if you are replacing it.

Re: Rain water intrusion

Interesting. Guess I should actually try a cup. We've got used to the kureg at the house so was hoping to find a built-in version of that type, but doesn't appear to exist. Good to know the classic makes good coffee! Thanks!

I might have a similar problem but for us the bolster on the port side just forward of the closet gets damp which I had assumed was coming from up above in the areas your looking. Yesterday I removed the bolster and discovered water is running right along the bolster all the way from up behind the mirror. It makes sense that enough water would continue its way down to below the drawer where your finding it. I haven't figured out how to get behind the mirror yet but I will let you know what I can figure out.

Very interesting!
Remove the speaker on the port side if you can get to it, and shine a light.
That would take you to cavities around the windlass foot switches, and the windlass itself. remote spotlight. hmmmm going down to look at my bolster, but we haven't had rain since Mathew blew by, so it's all dry right now.

Hey guys, so I'm still trying to figure out all the ins-and-outs since getting my 370. I believe I have an issue with my chartplotter (Raymarine C120) with it talking to the autopilot (Raypilot 650 controller). It could be user error but I'm getting the "X" on the chartplotter where it should show it connected to the autopilot. That has led me to trying to find the various other components with the autopilot. And that's what lead me to posting in this thread. So the question that's got me stumped is, where the hell did sea ray put the autopilot computer? I'm finding the seatalk wires running from the C120 and Raypilot650 but can't seem to find where they end up... Should be at the autopilot computer, correct?

The first clue, is that Sea Ray did not install a C120 in your 1995 370 Sundancer. It didn't exist then.
I installed my computer behind the dash. I have a RL80CRC, but the C120 does have a seatalk (classic) connection. It is the 3 pin, crescent moon shaped connector. The 650 is the model for the AP head unit. The course computer should be the same as mine. I have a few seatalk connections, and a NMEA-0183 connection.
If your chartplotter is working, and your autopilot is working, you should be able to hook em up by connecting sea talk from each to the course computer.

Yes, sorry I should have mention that the course computer that runs the autopilot is what I'm looking for. There's seatalk wires leading from the chartplotter and the 650 but where are they going is the question..
