Official 320 Dancer Thread

Hello, I am considering buying an '04 320. The SmartCraft unit on the dash is getting & displaying data but will not scroll the various pages. Is it toast? Can it be replaced in kind? What are the upgrade options? From the Pacific Northwest. Thanks

Hey Gregor,
I bought the same exact boat and had the same exact problem. Mercury doesn't sell or make the SC5000 anymore, so you'll have to upgrade to their VesselView system if you want a new unit. You'll likely only need the display and an adaptor to connect the SC5000 to the VesselView. Depending on the model you go with and if you want to install it yourself, you're prob looking at 1-2k for brand new. I took my chances and scoured the internet for 6 months until I found a guy selling his old SC5000 for a couple hundred, which didn't have a scratch on it. The problem with not being able to navigate through the menu is the directional pad. To get my old unit to work for the 1st 6 months, I had to poke holes in each button and use a small screwdriver to navigate to the screen I wanted, then I didn't touch it. Not something I'd recommend doing, since there is power to the unit...but I needed the depth sounder screen in a bad way. Good luck in whichever direction you decide to go...

New fridge came in for the cockpit. Hope to install on Saturday or Sunday.

Our cockpit unit went also. Todd320 what's the model number and manuf. and where did you purchase it?

It is from west marine, it is a Norcold universal fridge/freezer, 2.0L, model number NR740SS. Cost was 849,+a 2 year extended warranty. I think the warranty made it 849+96. So with tax, 1 (boat) dollar.

My original still works but is a bit weathered on the outside and missing a rack on the inside (rusted out), with a few rust stains. So, if anyone wants to make an offer on it.. I will take whatever, $100 plus shipping? I will post pics this weekend.

New fridge installed. Pretty much an exact fit, a tad bit shorter, so there is more of a gap between bottom of fridge and the bottom of the opening, but leaves plenty of room for ventilation.

Hey Todd,
The new SS fridge looks great!! I've got a question for ya about the cutout for your old/new fridge. I took out the original U-Line Ice-Maker this past weekend and plan on ordering a fridge in the next week or so. I know I'll need to cut out about 1-2" for the width of the fridge to fit in the old ice-maker spot, but did yours also have that recessed shelf on the port side? It's pretty tight in there as you know, so it looks like that shelf added more depth for an ice-maker or fridge, as well as provides a ledge for the back of the unit to be able to rest on at the bottom. I'm pretty sure I can get a fridge that's 15" wide, but would prefer to get the model you have which lists at 15 1/4" wide. Just curious if I need to pull that recessed shelf out, do some cutting to make it fit in there, or if my ice-maker shelf is the same as your fridge shelf? Thx in advance...

That looks exactly like my opening. The shelf provides support, but I am going to get a small piece of a 2x4 and put it under the other side so both sides have support. I am pretty sure the width of my fridge is exactly 15" (at least the part inserted is), but I could be mistaken. I know the website says 15.25, but I could have sworn when I put a tape measure to it, it was 15. The cutout was anywhere from 15.25 to 15.5, depending upon where I measured. The old DE0040 was also exactly 15" in the back as well.

Awesome, thanks so much Todd and this was a huge help to me. Gonna order that same model you just put in and avoid any other headaches.

Hi all

3 quick questions for the group... we have had our 320 for just about 6 weeks now and loving her! But as very new boat owners, we had a few questions we wanted to ask about:

1 - The genny has quit. We have the 5w Kohler. It seems to turn over, but as soon as I release the start switch, it dies. Have tried holding it for 8 seconds, but same thing. I've read about spark plugs, vapor lock, remote switch and other things, but just wondering if anyone has had this specific problem and what solved it?

2 - Does the fridge only work with the generator on? We disconnected from shore power and headed out with a fridge full of stuff, and when we realized the genny didn't work, couldn't find a way to put the fridge on. It would seem to me that the fridge should work under normal engine operating conditions... or do you really have to run the generator all the time if you have food/drinks in the fridge?

3- The snaps on our canvas top are sticking and are very hard to snap on (many won't snap at all), and then very hard to get off. We thought about putting a mallet on the boat to hammer them in, but then assumed that they would be equally hard to get off, so didn't want to do that. I heard that Chapstick helps? Silicone spray? Any suggestions of ways to do this are appreciated!

Oh, and any idea how to upload a picture of the boat? No matter what I do, there is always an error when I try to upload an image using this editor.

Thanks all!

Hi Eric,

The fridge runs off your shore and genny. It requires 110v. Not sure about your genny as I have a westerbeke. The westerbeke has a breaker on the side that if someone hits it...then generator would crank but not run. Hopefully someone with the same
Generator as your will chime in. You might also be able to call a local tech and they could walk you through the start up process.

Feel your pain on the generator. I have had my share of challenges with mine, but thankfully they seem to be all good now.

For the fridge... it runs on 110v when plugged into shore power. In the switch panel it's usually controlled by the "outlets" breaker. When on battery, you need to have the refrigerator switch in the 12v side of your panel turned on.

My cockpit fridge runs all the time (have to turn the dial on the fridge on of course), uses batteries when no 110 (gen or shore). Galley fridge requires the D.C. Panel refrigerator switch turned on when on D.C. Power, or the 110 AC refrigerator switch when on AC power.

Generator issue i had exact same symptoms. Turned out to be a part which drives the impeller, tech bought Sherwood 8000k impeller kit, there is a yellow part which was broken. I have a Kohler 5ECD 5kw. It was shutting off because it detected no water flow.

I use a dry spray lubricant, which is silicone I believe, intended for sails and such. That will make them less sticky. Bought at west marine.

Upgrading Thoughts

Hi All:

Last year I upgraded my chartplotter from the original to a Raymarine C95. All went well and I really enjoyed the new model. This year I am contemplating upgrading the original Smartcraft SC5000 to Vesselview. My questions to all you aficionados that have upgraded the same way is:

1. Are there any consistent problems encountered with going from the original 2004 to the new models?

2. Which model do you recommend?

4 or 7 both of which should be plug and play.....the 7 provides dual on screen viewing for each engine as apposed to switching views from engine to engine

502 or 702 - these are more complicated to upgrade to but do provide NMEA 2000 connections to my other devices but also about $1000 difference from the 4 & 7

3. I have no thru hull devices for calculation of speed and depth and therefore assume the external black plastic unit mounted on the stern at the bottom calculates all of that. It seems to work ok but should I upgrade that as well by either replacing it or going to a thru hull?

This is an expensive upgrade so I'm trying to see exactly what I need and don't need before ordering parts etc. so any advice is most appreciated.

I have not done this personally but I have read that you can use a bar of soap to lubricate snaps......

Hello all, new owner of a 2004 320DA. Loving the boat so far, but have lots of questions about minor issues. First one...the Clarion manual states that it has an AUX input, but I can't find it anywhere. I assume that there is a 1/4 inch audio in jack somewhere that I could hook to the headphone out of my phone or tablet? Thanks!
