Official 290 Sundancer Thread

I have not posted my install yet but here it is. I just posted for advice before I started. Anyone attempting this mod on a 290 feel free to ask for advice I'm sure I will save you some time and headache. I also installed a pedistal for my new magma grill.

Looks great. I remember now when you posted for advice I googled extended swim plat forms on 290 and saw some images of finished projects.

WOW , that swim platform looks HUGE back there. How are the stainless support rods holding up? It looks like it bolts to the back edge of the existing platform. I would have though greater support could be had by making the mold conform to the underside of the existing platform as well.

How does the 350 tow? I have an 08 F250 SuperDuty Turbo Diesel if I ever get the urge to tow mine around.

The 350 does great for me. You know you have something behind you but the truck has plenty of power. I was very pleased.

I forgot to add that I pulled it with 1/4 tank of gas, no water, holding tank empty and all unneeded gear removed.

DINKS !

Has anyone thought of one for the 290? What sort of davit system would work on the integrated platform?

Zodiak makes a 6'7" wood floor - http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|215570|216220|295555&id=929538

and an 8'2" RIB - http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|215570|216220|295557&id=1176551

The RIB might be too large especially when hung off the back and you are trying to board. But it would be the perfect size for 3 and if you ever did upgrade.

With an extended platform like Conch... you would have plenty of room to put a davit system in.

The rods are attached to the boat by 1.25" lag screws and at the platform a pan head screw and a bolt all the way through recessed in the top of the platform. Its surrprisingly sturdy. 350 tows fine plenty of power but wish I had DRW.

Sounds like you have the accessory bug as bad as I do. I have already been looking at dingys(7' or 8' ??? ) but can't decide on a davit. Need something that can be removed easily as I wouldn't need it all the time.

Conch'd,

I just found this thread. It's cool to talk with other 290 owners.:smt038

Conch'd - Is this swimplatform a kit or custom made? Can you share with us (roughly) what it cost to get this done? I'd love to this to my boat! You did a great job with this mod!

One of my few complaints about the 290 is the short swim platform, the ladder that will F*&^% up the props if left down, and the lack of clearance from the props if someone slips off the rear deck while idling.

I tow my 290 around different spots in Florida for boating. I just got from a week at Cape Coral (Ft Myers). I bought my 2006 Sea Ray 290 in January. It was a Repo Boat. I had a trailer made for it at Ameratrail and spent about $5K in repairs. (I also added a pair of swim platform lights). I have spent a couple of months getting her back up to par, and now am ready for some serious cruising.

As a side note, when I was at the Miami Boat Show, I talked with the Sea Ray Reps about the future of the Sea Ray 290. They told me that the 290 is not dead, but was undergoing some styling revisions. The "new" 290 should debut later this year (maybe in late October in Ft Lauderdale). I suspect that you are going to see a revised cockpit layout with a built in grill and circular seating (ala 310), and some minor tweeks to the cabin. I bet the exterior hull shape will be unchanged. These changes are to accodomodate the whines from the "280" crowd that want the "290" to look like the "280" (IMHO). So, the earlier talk on this board about Sea Ray destroying the molds to the model are a "myth"

I tow my 290 with 2008 Ford F-350 diesel (SRW). It tows my boat great, although everywhere I stop people are amazed that I am able to tow such a big boat.

If anyone is coming down to Florida to cruise, drop us a note, we'd love to meet you.

We need to start our own Club of proud 290 owners - the best boat built by Sea Ray and quickly stopped production!

The platform cost $ 2474.00 from swimplatforms.com shipped to SC from Pheonix AZ. I also had to also buy another ladder bracket for $ 135.00 from GG Schmitt and sons because there was no way to get to the nuts to remove the old bracket and I didn't want to have to patch any holes. I probably have another $ 75.00 in caulk and hardware ( half of the bolts sent with the platform were not long enough ) and another $ 20.00 to have someone shorten one of the support rods. They say it installs in 2-3 hours but by the time I found all the correct hardware ,etc...... it took 2 weeks. Also I had to make a couple of spacers for the ladder bracket so it would clear the lip of the platform, I made it out of a plastic cutting board. I cut strips the length of the bracket and epoxied them together. Oh I almost forgot, another $ 20.00 fo the beer.

Question:

For those of you who tow their 290 how do you fasten the stern to the trailer without the strap interfering with the trim tabs?

Hey Conch..Nice writeup.

I have never towed my 290, But did tow my 270 and my 220 lots. I'd be surprised if a strap for the back is needed...Got plenty of weight to hold the stern down I would think. Maybe just leave them kinda loose for safety sake?

I have been towing without them just fine but I have some straps my friend gave me and I thought I would use them.

I didn't have any issue with the trim tabs. Straps lined up out side of them. Close but just out side. I have not been following this thread over the past week been on the boat:grin::grin:

If this has not already been answered the weight distribution hitch levels the tow vehicle distributing the weight equally on both axels of the tow vehicle making steering and breaking easier and reducing the strain on the vehicle.

Re: Official (new design) 290 Sundancer Thread

Well....I was going to nominate you as the President of the 290 club...but forget it now.

Yeah, he is no longer a member of the 290 club, and hopefully he deletes his presence from CSR too.

Beautiful boats you guys have, I'm jealous of you all. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Thanks but no reason to be jealous, we have just as much fun on our bowrider as we do in the cruiser. It's a different experience on both. As long as you're on the water you're in the club.

So true..just a different kind of fun..I can see why people who get big boats...buy a little boat to fool around on...
