    Thanks Captn TJ,
I just figured it out when you prompted me to look for a manual. On the 215 it accepts NMEA 0183. Different than the 210, old tech however, they do make a 0183 to 2000 converter.

Curious if anyone has replaced their Galley mixer/faucet, and if so with what? My 280 came with an aftermarket kitchen style faucet at the galley sink, and it's a single handle mixer located on the side. It's too tall for the microwave door to open properly, and with the handle on the side, if I don't strap it shut it will turn on while underway and make a mess if I leave the water system turned on.

    Roger that - but won't you need 4 - 0183 wires - 2 receive and 2 send?

Don't know the capabilities of this VHF model - maybe it's just receive so it can transmit lat/lon for DSC?

use a long extension with the rubber insert in the plug socket. You can do it by feel pretty easy.

That is exactly what it does, transmits lat/lon for DSC, two wires + and -.

Hmmm, this got my attention! So I just did a quick search on the Mercruiser Vessel View Mobile, https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/gauges-and-controls/gauges-displays/vesselview-mobile/ . This looks very cool and useful! So I also have a 2003, but this link says only good for 2004 and newer. You've obviously proved that it works. So can you provide a bit more info on what it takes to hook it up? I'd like to verify that I have the connections required (though as your's, I think my boat is equipped, but also does not have any SmartCraft gauges.

    Thanks,

I'm out of town until tonight and will send more info over the weekend. Look at your out drive and see if the smartcraft label is there. I have a bravo III. You won't get all the info as you dont have all the sensors. I will try and send a screen shot.

Part was made by Garelick. I’m not sure if it is still made. Possible sources might be parts liquidators like Flounder Pounder or Great Lakes Skipper and the usual standbys EBay & Amazon. Silly question, did you look under the wet bar. It’s normal storage space is clamped against the aft wall kind of tucked in.

The same situation can exist on the other end of the cable where it attaches to the power steering ram. There is a threaded cap on the ram that holds the casing of the cable stationary. If that cap is loose even a couple revolutions, there will be excessive play.

There are four, or more correctly two pair. One pair is for transmitting data, the other pair is for receiving data. A basic VHF with DSC would only need a reception pair (or listener) to receive the location data transmitted by the GPS. If the VHF has an additional feature like an AIS receiver than it would have four and the VHF transmit pair (or talker).

Simplistically the listener pair of the receiving device attaches to the talker pair of the source device. In other words output goes to input and vice versa.

NMEA 0183 is complicated as things can be daisy chained and doubled up and there are limitations on how many devices can listen to a single device etc..

    Gunn,
You need to check your engine serial numbers. At one time Merc published of starting serial numbers for when Smartcraft was introduced to that product. Cuins 496, like mine was designed from the beginning to be (and is) Smartcraft. SC is a subset of the automotive CANBuss technology that was introduced in the 90s. The 4.3 by being an older design had to be upgraded.

This is the reason Sea Ray did not immediately implement SC. Only some of the engines supported it.

Hey guys I have a question about my 280 with twin 5.7 mercruisers, I took it out for the first time this weekend and it seems like the port motor has more power than the starboard one does. I feel like I have to pin the starboard motor where the port motor is at half throttle at the same rpm , any input would would be helpful

Start with plugs, wires & distributor if you don’t know the history.

Would that make the difference in the throttle with one being pinned and the other being at half throttle

Good morning. I have a Smartcraft related question. I have a 2004 280 with twin 4.3s. My port tach/LCD stopped displaying any data from the port engine or depth transducer. I swapped the port and stbd cables but the port LCD still didn't work. Interestingly, if I disconnect and reconnect the cable into the gauge the LCD will briefly display data but will eventually stop displaying. My next step is to remove the gauge and see if I can disassemble the casing and look for loose wires or bad solder joints. Any other suggestions are much appreciated.
