Official 280 Sundancer Thread

IF I'm understanding your question correctly, threads in the 280 sub-forum only show up here. So if your question is 280 specific, this is the place to post it, however if your question is more general (i.e. bravo drives, or electronics related) you may be better off in general discussions or a specific forum (drives/electronics/etc.) hope that helps

stg099, Let ask the question a different way is there a separate link to the 280 forum. I responded to your original message by doing a search on 280. But I don't see it as a separate forum. Maybe I'm just not use to this forum approach. What I was trying to avoid was going into general discussion forum and hunting down the 280 messages. Thanks for being patient with my questions. BTW my contract is on a 2005 with 5.0 engines.

OK I think I've got it - I just saved the 280 thread as a link so now I can go directly to it.

Thx

Hello everyone,

I've been reading the thread since the fist page (up to page 60 so far) and many of the photos have the following image so I can't see them. When I went on the photobucket site and referenced P500 they want big bucks - what gives?

Photobucket unfortunately changed their policy to want something like $400 bucks a year to host personal photos. The sad reality is that this made the majority of previously posted photos on the site unusable. That, combined with a more recent change in forum software that made old links not work has made it a "challenge" to get the most out of the older threads or posts.

I realize that this can be a widely varied response going in, but could those of you with Twin 4.3's and alpha drives comment on your frequency of impeller replacement and drive lube changes? I recently purchased a very lightly used 2004 280 and have a receipt from June of 2016 for drive lube and impeller kits on both drives. The boat sat in a slip all season for 2017 and was rarely used, so I'm wondering if replacing them is overkill or worth it for good piece of mind. I can do the work myself, just want to sanity check if I'm crazy for pulling a part that likely hasn't seen but a few hours use.

Edit, after some research today, I think pulling the drives and having a thorough inspection is in order, as well as replacing the impellers for piece of mind.

Yes, replacing them would be overkill. They were just changed last season and you want to replace them already? I have replaced the impellers twice in my 280DA that I've owned for 7 years. Once after I purchased it for peace of mind, and once a couple of years ago (for peace of mind) when I was replacing all of the bellows. Never have I had one fail.

If the boat wasn't used much, the drive lube will be fine. It's not like motor oil, you don't have to worry about burned oil/gas, etc. mixing in.

Enjoy your new boat!

Thank you for the tips! Of course I couldn't help myself and pulled the starboard drive to work on at home one at a time on a stand. I can confirm that you're absolutely right, the impeller looks brand new, however the drive really needed some attention in spots for corrosion as well as replacing the anodes, so at the very least I have personal piece of mind that this is taken care of. Bellows and gimbal bearing look brand new as they should, so it's nice to know that won't be a problem for hopefully a LONG while.

That said, to anyone contemplating pulling and working on the drives yourself, if you have a little mechanical ability and patience this is absolutely a job you can do yourself. A little heavy so make sure you have a helper or are in decent shape to get the drives off/back on, but outside of that it's straightforward.

So going through the survey today the guy found two water leaks in the 'aft cabin'. One adjacent to the forward bulkhead - but that one looks like a drain replacement. The second is along the starboard aft bulkhead and appears to be coming from the cockpit. The owner has agreed to have the dealer fix but curious if anyone else has had this problem and the source. Oh and this is on a 2005 280.

I did have water get into the aft cabin on my '05 280DA. The source was windshield mount screws that were not sealed/caulked properly. This leak was found the first day I owned the boat. It had rained that first night. Some of the screws had no sealant at all. It's an easy item to check and fix.

I was of the understanding that one reason we change the gear lube is to check to see if the lube is clean. If it is milky you may have a bad seal somewhere that could be letting water in and lube out. I store my boat in cold storage and would not want to take a chance that there could be any moisture in there.

I had water in the mid birth that came in through the windshield then ran through a crack in the calking that sealed the helm "hump" to the dash on my '04 280.

This is certainly - a great thread for 'new to me' 280's. A few more questions:

The helm seat (which moves up and down) rocks a bit - it's almost like there is a missing spacer or bushing between the telescoping shaft and the base shaft. Does anyone know if that spacer exists.

The halon system (05 280) while in the green is close to the red mark. The surveyor pointed this out. I believe this is the 'original' halon system. As anyone updated or had the system refilled?

I had looked at a three 280's before I decided on this one. All of the had staining (rust?) in the main cabin adjacent to the fridge/head. Is this caused by a water leak from either?

Has anyone upgraded the original Raymarine radio (believe it's a #215) if so what did you put in its place. It looks to be a totally different shape than the newer radio - SH or ICOM out there.

I'm sure I'll have many more questions - especially on the operation of the boat - so thanks in advance everyone.

TJ, I don't have an answer on the Halon question, but as for the captain's chair, if you lay next to it and look underneath you'll see the adjustments that it has. There is a large handle you can screw'unscrew to adjust the seat height, so it may be that someone just has it set too high so there is not enough "post" in the mount. Might be a quick fix.

As for the radio, my boat came with a Standard Horizon GX2150 where the raymarine usint used to be. It has AIS, as well as GPS if you have a GPS receiver for it to speak to, so give it a look if you plan on an upgrade.

As for the rust stains in the carpet, mine had it as well. The forward bilge is bone dry, and it looked like the cause was long fixed, but not sure what the original cause could/would have been to cause the stain. I know that from the dinette side, it's likely that the rusty water from the A/C drip pan sloshed around and stained the rug.

I'm in a similar situation in that I'm just really learning the 280 so I look forward to sharing ideas/solutions.

I have the seat all the way down to test the theory and I just shot a note off to Garelick the mfg - will post their reply. Thanks for the quick reply. Also I will post the Halon issue on the broader Sea Ray site

So I heard back from Garelick - there is a bushing that goes into the helm seat to keep it from wobbling - if anyone is interested the part number is 99027 $15.00 plus shipping.

My complements to them they responded within 2 hours to my email.

Has anyone recently replaced the microwave on their 280? I saw posts from several years ago about the topic but curious if anyone has done it recently and if so the brand and model would be appreciated.

Tony

Anyone on he microwave??

Also in previous posts related to the IAC value there was some mention of a 'foam muffler'. Can anyone provide more details on this.

Thx

Thanks Kevin - I did see that one, however, the model is now discontinued. I'm headed to the boat trhis morning to get measurements and then will start an online search. Will report any findings.

Tony
