Official 215 Express Thread

thought i would share a bad cell phone pic of my boat with the new decals and stripes i had installed a couple weeks ago...i changed the colors to better match the color of the canvas and interior and changed the font of the letters/numbers.....i liked the original design of the decals so i kept that design.....the original decals were faded and were chipping off pretty badly and i did not like the colors.....i have not had a chance to wax the boat this year yet, so it should look even better after a good wax job.....maybe this coming long w/e i have off from work...

Very classy Cliff... nice job.

Looks great! I was just looking in to doing the same thing. Makes me motivated.

thanks for the comments on the stripes and decals....i think they turned out pretty good myself....my neighbor thought we got a new boat....i did not add the third swirl decal...that was the original design...i think the decal design changed slightly with the years and some years only had two swirl decals....

since it has been raining EVERYDAY for the past few weeks we decided not to take the boat out over the long July 4th W/E....so i tried to wax the boat between rain showers....i got both sides waxed beneath the rub rail.....man does the wax really make the colors in the new decals pop out.....the reflection is like a mirror....i plan to try and wax some more this week after work but they are calling for rain again for the next several days.....no end in sight for this weather pattern according to the weather gurus.....my wife made the comment a couple days ago that the boat sure is looking more and more like an expensive yard ornament since we have not been able to use it much this year so far.....

I agree. We made it out on the Lake for approximately 5 hrs on Friday. We had to keep moving to miss the rain but luckly no lightning storms. All in all it was nice. These are great boats.

does anyone know where i can get the ladder recoated the coating is coming off iam in the westrin lake erie area thanks terry

i ended replacing mine because the coating was coming off and could not find a direct fit replacement....the replacement ladder has grab rails that extend above the swim deck level and make getting out of the water MUCH easier....it was not a direct fit so i had to drill new holes in the swim platform and fill in the old holes....

I had them made at a graphics company in Hickory, NC called 'High Performance Graphics'......they should still have my file so yould should be able to have them make the new decals and stripes and ship them to you....then you can have them installed by someone locally...

here is the contact at HPG:

Patrick Loyzelle
Sales - High Performance Graphics
Office: 828-294-1180
Cell 828-851-9311
E: patrick@hpghickorync.com

Just tell him you have a boat like Cliff Archie......the cost of the new decals should not be too bad since i paid them to do all the design work....

i got the ladder at West Marine....you can see it in this pic....it is only folded up once...it looks like it is dragging the water but it is not....it can fold up again and rest against the transom.....

I'm looking for some help from the 215 crowd regarding batteries, I just purchased my 215 that has 2 batteries and I assume a factory battery switch on the port side. The prior owner installed two start batteries that I think are the wrong group and one is the wrong type. Which battery is supposed to be the Deep Cycle(either battery position 1 or 2) and which number is supposed to be the start battery. One last question, is the correct battery group 27? The prior installed a group 29 start and a group 24 start. I don't have anything that will draw large amp loads but I would like the bilge and the radio's to run on a deep cycle and anything else I decide to install.

Thank you in advance

i have two group 27 deep cycle batteries.....they have proven to be adequate for my needs....i use the 'ALL' setting on the battery switch to crank the engine when we first launch the boat and leave it there until we drop anchor.....then i switch to either battery '1' or '2' when i shut down the engine....i will continue to use this battery for all power needs for as long as we are anchored which includes some overnight stays.....either the stereo or the TV will be on all the time except when we are sleeping and then we run one or two 12V fans throughout the night not to mention cell phone chargers, water toys inflator, GPS, etc. used as needed....i have never depleted the charge in one of the batteries with this use....in fact i usually have enough charge left to crank the engine from that battery alone....by leaving the selector switch on this battery the alternator will charge the battery as we cruise and/or head back to the ramp.....if the battery I used as the house battery would not have cranked the engine i still had the other battery to use.....i like to alternate which battery i use as the house battery so that the usage is distributed between the two batteries...

'technically' i think the dual battery system is designed to have one of the batteries dedicated to the engine and the other dedicated as the house battery...the engine battery in this system is a 'cranking' battery that has high cranking amps but cannot be discharged and recharged over and over like a deep cell battery....the house battery in this system is a deep cycle battery to be used soley for running electronics when docked or anchored....this battery is designed to be discharged and recharged over and over...

i personnaly like to keep both batteries the same so i can use them alternately for the house battery as i stated above....either one of the deep cycle batteries has more than enough cranking amps to start the engine by themselves if needed.....i will also mention that i have an on-board dual bank battery charger that is connected to both batteries...i plug the charger into a 110VAC drop cord when the boat is on the trailer and stored in my back yard which refreshes the charge on both batteries and keeps them fully charged at all times....

hope this helps....

thanks cliff that pic is good it looks great i will check it out thanks terry

Cliff, thank you for the detailed response. It was very helpful. I have looked at some of the modifications/improvements that you have done, nice work!! You mentioned sharing some of the details of the modifications via email, is that still valid?

I have spent a lot of time so far repairing the prior owners "repairs" and this is one of them. Having a group 24 and a group 29 and both of the batteries are from 2007, not bad for Wal-Mart batteries. I see you have the same shore power option on your boat as I do. Have you used it yet and whats the amp load that the outlets will support? I didn't see any breakers in the boat so far that are dedicated for the 110 shore power. Are they hidden? We are looking to do some overnights shortly and would like to use the shore power but we have so many other things to repair before we do that and wait for this crazy heat to subside. Thanks again for answering all my questions.

Richard,
i will be glad to share any info i can about the mods i have done to my boat, so ask away.....i believe the shore power box is rated for 30 amps....i think i remember seeing that printed on the outside of the connection box cover....on my boat it supplies power to one double outlet in the cabin....the outlet is on the galley cabinet in the corner just below where the side storage shelf (the long one that is on the side of the V berth) meets the galley cabinet......i also have the on-board dual bank battery charger wired to the shore power box....that way i can use an adapter to allow me to use a regular 110VAC drop cord to supply power to the shore power box and keep both batteries charged all the time while the boat is in storage at home....i have not used the shore power at a marina yet but i do have a 25' shore power cord that came with the boat.....there are no breakers for the shore power supply...the outlet in the cabin is a GFI outlet that will trip if there is a problem...there is a reset button on the outlet if/when needed......

the summer heat and humidity is brutal...i have been cleaning and waxing the boat the past couple weeks off and on and it gets tough to handle the heat....

the fresh water pump is located under the cockpit deck between the two front seats.....remove both the floor access panels and the white plastic storage bin....you will see the fresh water tank and the fresh water pump in the forward section of this compartment...the fuel tank is in the rear of this compartment....

The fuse panel is located on the back side of the dash...it is accessed by removing the wall access panel in the head compartment......you can find the parts manual and the operating manual for your boat on the Sea Ray web site...they have lots of archived manuals for older boats.......

Cliff,

Thanks a lot again,

Unfortunately the owners manual for 1997 is not available on their website only a "supplemental manual" which covers the basic operation...

Thank you,
