QUESTION. !!! Does any one know the difference between the 8.1lt /370 hp ,
and the 8.1HO/420 hp , are the extra HP from computer programming ,( such as in a car) ?
Or are there physical differences also , and what are they.
Ive seen the higher HP motors in some larger ,40ft boats of other brands ???

Bigger cam and tune. The HO also has a forged crank. From everything I've read, the HO uses more fuel and gains a knot or two in the top end.

Mercury racing take the current 8.2 out to 520hp and 540hp versions.

Ok here's one for u guys.... my boat. 05 340 8.1's v drives. At 800-1150rpms I get a funny woo woo woo sound. Under 800 it doesn't happen, over 1200 it doesn't happen. Props are perfect according to my marina. It was suggested to check fluid level in transmission on that one side. Only happens on one side. I think starboard side but can't remember

A/C Question . After changing out your AC drip pan ( if you have done so )
did anyone put or use anything under the drip to cushion any vibration/noise
Between the AC unit and mounting area , I was thinking an insulation mat , rubber or foam , with a very slight lift on the right side to channel the water toward the drain ,
if so, did that work ( reduce noise/vibration) or am I wasting my time
and just put the unit back as it was ???? Also what do you use to wax/clean the non skid
on the bow.
That Jim

That sounds like a really good idea to me with drip pan. Haven't done this as of yet though. As far as nonskid goes, woody wax makes a nonskid wax. It's in a spray bottle and u brush it in. Works pretty good

Another AC Question/thought ,instedvofvremoving the unit ,I was thinking of
scraping as much rustvasci can from the pan , the pour liquid flex seal or rust
arrestor , or truck bed coating . Has any one tried this and how did this work out ?

Is it your Port? Port runs in reverse and mine does the same thing. Put your starboard in reverse and see if it makes the same sound. Mine does.

The only difference in a 496 MAG, and a 496 MAG HO, is the Cam, and the tune in the ECU. Crank, rods, pistons, heads, all the same literally, can cam swap and tune and its done.

They sound SO much better with the HO cam in them when you have through hulls too. big differnce in sound.

i think its port but i can't remember now. she'll be in the water in a couple weeks and then i'll know again.

Is there chaulking on the inside of the windshield frame/ to the hull ?
Of course it's on the outside . I was going to redo mine , the wing Windows
are Chaulked on both sides but it doesn't look like the windshield is chalked
on the inside ???
The boat was always stored inside/heated but the chalking is dried up ,
i also had the deck area I front of the windshield checked for moisture ,
( no problems there ) will rechaulk the screws too !! Thanks

The curved radius of the inside windshield is probably not caulked on the inside...if it is, I'd love to see the individual that could pull that off. The caulking on mine stops where the radius starts.

While you are working on the outer windshield, make sure you take apart the wiper posts and caulk them as well. Unless someone has done it previously, all that is protecting your cabin is a flimsy rubber gasket.

Thanks , I had marine max caulk the wind shield, Port and starboard windows gills/intake vents
the stationary port hole windows on the fore deck. Needless to say they stopped on the inside of the windshield just as it started to curve I believe it stands out a little because of the new caulking I thought they didn't finish the job that's why I was asking about that caulking on the front radius of the windshield
Thanks Jim

I was not there when they did the job , but when looking into it you need the same
tools you use at home , I have a caulk /grout removal tool . Just dig and scrape, and have patience . It's very time consuming . It was expensive , but worth it to me , since I would not have the patience they also caulked the screws .

I just put in a ticket with mercruiser to see if they'll replace my cool fuel modules for free... let's see what happens

I believe up a certain year the cool fuel systems were painted
on the inside of the cap , the paint chips peeled off blocking the filters,
so there was a recall on those , but there was a buliton on my boat 05 340 SD ,some type of a clip which marine max replaced last year.
you can always call mercury marine customer service to find out if there's
open bulitons, or previous service work on your boat , Cust service # i1 (920) 929-5040
