Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

Just got my 2000 340. My surveyor suggested that I switch to Aluminum as they remain active in all water, fresh, brackish and salt. That is in my survey.

IIRC he said zinc was good for salt water, Magnesium for fresh and aluminum for all water. In discussion he stated zinc would be come inactive in fresh water.

For what it is worth, I did recharge my vent filter and will never do it again. That might have been one of the most disgusting things I have done to date. Next time I will just build my own. It will only cost a couple bucks more and I won't have to mess with cleaning it out.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum as I am a new Sea Ray 340 Sundancer (2006) owner. I've been following many of the threads and got valuable information so far. This new (to me) boat is my 5th in 20 years so I'm not a complete newbie, but I'm new to 8.1S and V-drive engines.

Today, while on my last day of a 14 days/650 miles trip with the boat I started having issues with my port engine. When the drive is in gear, forward or reverse, every 15-20 seconds it's like the ignition shut off and restart for a fraction of a second. When is does it I also lose the smartcraft gauges and get a single beep. I can run the engine in neutral and rev it up to 1500-1800 RPM for as long as 30 min and never get the problem, but keep it in idle (650-670 RPM) and put the drive in gear and I'll have to problem after 15 to 30 seconds with no alarm codes. It will do it 5-6 times in a 1-2 minutes then I completely lose the smartcraft gauges and system view information, but the engine keep running just fine.

I've check all the electronic connections and clean them all with the same result. The local Sea Ray dealer is completely baffled with this problem.

I thought I might ask to group if anyone else ever seen something like this.

Thanks
Pat...

Hi All, well here is a little update, if anyone ever come across a similar problem.

After many hours of troubleshooting I was able to isolate the problem to a particular sensor, and this morning my mechanic was finally able to make it down my marina with his mercury diagnostic computer and validate what we thought was the problem. A faulty Throttle Position Sensor, TPS, was giving erratic signals back to the PCM unit which was shorting out the entire system.

$100 part, 30 min labor, and now we're all good to go to envoy the last few weekends of summer.

Thanks for the update! It's always good to read resolutions so if anyone ever runs into your issue they have a place to start troubleshooting.

Dash lights out. Boat is new to me this Spring and last night was one of first times I noticed dash lights not on while driving at dusk. I was driving boat with NAV lights on and pushing the DIM buttons but the dash lights were not coming on. Any ideas?

Any change out there water heater yet? Any tips or tricks? Mine finally rotted out:( new one on order

Did you try adjusting the brightness through your smart craft monitor, if so equipped?

Hi folks, I think this thread is a great idea. I too enjoy the other 340 thread, but many issues don't pertain to our boats. Regarding the led bulbs, about what should it cost to switch the cockpit and radar arch bulbs out?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: 2003.5-2008 340 Sundacer Thread

Last knight a budy and I went out. He has a 2006 340 and claims he is burning 0.5 gallons per mile. Compared to my 310 with 5.7's I burn about 8-10 gallons per hour, per engine. That puts me at about 1.9 gallons per mile both engines.

The question is what are you 340 owners burning?

.8 to .9 mpg at 3450 RPM, 27 mph, 29 gph

If I back it down to 1400 RPM, I can get 1.4 mpg at 7.8 mph, 4.8 gph.

Is your buddy running wide open? I burn 60 GPH at WOT, which would come close to matching the figure your buddy stated. Tell him to throttle back.....

Has anyone had their props scanned? This winter I'm going to have my props scanned. The Starboard engine is running approx. 300 RPMs less than the Port engine. V-Drives approx 220 hours.

I have 496 Mags with Bravo III - 1.03mpg, 26.9 gph and 27.8mph at 3320 and 1.27mpg, 4.8 gph and 7mph at 1250rpm. I only dream of getting 2.5mpg ...

Tomco, I have a340da with 496s with bravo IIIs as well. What pitch props are you running,

Jeremy, I believe they are 22 pitch. What kind of mileage are you getting in yours? I'm going up tomorrow to change the plugs - I don't think they have ever been changed. I'm going to retake the readings when I'm done. I'm interested to see if it makes much of a difference. On another note - do you have a camper top on yours?

I have a 2003.5 340 SDA with Bravo III drives ... which leaves a nice amount of room in the engine compartment. Between the starboard battery bank and generator is a nice 14" space that I'd like to put some storage for tools and engine supplies. Does anyone know for sure how thick the floor is in this area? The battery hold down and generator are both screwed/bolted to it so I figure I should be able to use some 1" screws but I'm not real sure ... with the boat in the water I can't get a good read on how thick this area is. between bat and gen.JPG

I have not looked in a few months but last I looked it was about 1 mpg. I run around 3400 rpms at about 31mph and 31gph. I would have to look to get more accurate numbers. I am running 28p hill marine 4x4 (4 blades) and I think I am a bit over propped. I can hit 4600 rpms so that test is fine as WOT is 4400-4800 on the 496 but I am wondering if I had less pitch if I might get a little better fuel numbers. Yours fuel numbers are much better than mine with 22" pitch. I did plugs within the last 100hrs.

I had it done, I would not recommend Holland Propellers, I think that AeroMarine would be a better call. PM if you want more details.
