Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

So today I was getting ready to pull outta the marina, started both motors and the port side stalled. Then it started up and was fine. I’m thinking this might be the beginning of a problem with iac valve? These are the 8.1 with v drive setup.

ugh, spring commissioning and nothing work :(.
  • generator will run for one minute then shut off
  • fresh water leak from the lazurette spigot
  • AC pump doesn't pump water
  • Toilet won't hold vacuum and cycles endlessly
  • ended up breaking the starboard seacock while trying to close it to clean the strainer now I have no raw water the engine.

looks like june is shot waiting for a slot to get it looked at ....hope I can still salvage July

Probably a fuel issue, start with basics, filters, plugs etc. Then expand out.

  • fresh water leak from the lazurette spigot

If you have the transom shower, you can remove this an access the rear of the spigot. Is it a big leak from the front, rear or handle. For a front leak you should be able to pull the stem and replace a washer. If you want a temp fix just cap it with a garden hose cap. If it is rear then it may just be a loose fitting.

  • AC pump doesn't pump water

For a new commissioning this is more than likely the lose of prime. This is typical for my boat each spring. Try taking a ride and turn on the pump have someone look for flow. The water pressure from the movement may be enough to push the prime. If not you can prime from the exhaust port with a garden hose by back filling. There are other options.

  • Toilet won't hold vacuum and cycles endlessly

Does it hold water in the bowl? if not the seal may be leaking. Might just need to be lubricated. If not the you will need to backtrace to duckbills and vacuum pump.

That sucks. If it is just the handle try replacing it and soaking ball with PB Blaster to see if you can free it up. Otherwise you may need a short haul unless you are on a lift.

Outside of the seacock I would not let it keep me dockside for a month. Summer is too short.

thanks Kevin...by the way, after all the mechanical issues I started installing the canvas I got from you. nothing on the boat works but at least it looks great :) I'm thinking I may need a new mooring cover from you soon as well...now that I"ve replaced the bimini you really notice how faded the mooring cover is

I've got an appointment for the generator and seacock in two weeks then figure a week or so there to order parts and repair.

in the mean time I"ll get on the others my self. where is the duck valve for the toilet? is it under the bowl or in the bilge somewhere?

I loosen the hose clamps on the ac pump outgoing side, wedge a screwdriver in there just enough to break the seal and turn the pump on. Works every time.

I never tried that - it is just an airlock and the mag pump does not have the force to self prime. With a 16 yo A/C that works I try do a little as possible to it.

what spark plugs are you guys running in your 8.1's?
my plugs are 10 years old and would like to order new ones?
what did they come with?. what does the Mercruiser part number translate into? 33-863622001

I believe they came with ac delco originally, I did ngk’s last year and are very happy so far.
Surprised they lasted ten years maybe go with the same thing that’s a long time

Yep I use NGK TR55IX iridium plugs in mine and no complaints. IIRC they go by NGK part number 7164.

Hope your plugs haven't seized in the heads having been in there for 10 years.

yeah those plugs could be interesting to take out...maybe the impact gun is the way to go.

this has been a challenging year launching the boat...frustrated by the issues above, I decided to tackle some of the simpler tasks and went to install the new carpets I got from Snap-in Carpets. I emailed them the pics this morning. will follow up their response...

Aw dude ...well, it'll look great when it fits! :)

Also +1 on NGK's. And they're not that difficult to remove/install with a deep socket wrench. You do have to detach some of the hoses on the manifolds to get at one or two on each side, but no biggie. Maybe an hour per engine depending.

Be careful using an impact gun on steel pugs in an aluminum head (if the head is aluminum). Use anti-seize compound on the threads of the new pugs...

I thought there was an issue using anti-seize on the marine engines. I heard something about it making things worse for boats in salt water.

There is another product that’s recommended from mercury, technically u shouldn’t use anti seize anywhere saltwater could touch but I have been using it on stuff also. I used it on all bolts for impeller change recently and always on spark plugs.

Kev did u see my post about Iac valve? Just curious on your opinion. Also have u been down at Tobay at all?
