Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

Thanks guys. This wouldn't be a permanent install. Just something to hang/place in the engine room to keep it warm over winter then remove in spring. Still think it needs all the fancy bells and whistles?

Another thing to consider when using something temporary in your engine compartment is to find a way to fish the plug of the device up through a hole so it can be plugged in to a outlet outside the engine room vs. running an extension cord and leaving the plugged connection inside the engine compartment where a spark could happen.

On my previous 260DA I ran the cord from my xtreme bilge heater up through a hole where a water line was run to the helm wash sink and I just happened to have a plug in the cabinet so it was very convenient.

So I walked my dock(s) last weekend and it’s about 50/50 folks using inexpensive infrared heaters or the certified ones, I’m going with an extreme to be safe just going to ask super electrician if a 350 watt will be sufficient, they are about $150 less.

Are you guys talking about storing on the hard or in the water?

I’m in the water Mitch, only place to come out and stay on the hard is a place called All Season’s and they want a small fortune to pull the boat…sucks being on the lake…sometimes. All my larger boat dock mates say they haven’t had any major (engine/generator) issues. More like transome shower lines/sprayer stuff.

I have a plug right there as well and earmarked it for the heater. Solid idea about moving the connection out of the engine bay

I could be wrong but was told if i was gonna need a heater i could use a ceramic heater. Was told it has no open flame or spark. I store mine on land and wintetized but of i needed to heat cabin while working on stuff its the best. Thoughts?

Ceramic is fine in the cabin in the winter for jobs if you are there when it's on.

Salt wreaks havoc on anything metal so you'll need to check everything. Outdrive, transom assembly, exhaust system.
Raw or closed cooling?
Closed- the new engines are the reason I am interested in this particular boat. I think the asking price is a little high. But if I make an offer we will see. Any feedback on the 4.5L Merc engine?

4.3L, not 4.5L unless they've had work done to them right? Other than that I don't know anything in particular about those engines.
Closed is a huge plus, but you still have the transom assembly, outdrives and risers you'll need to check out closely. They're still getting all the salt.

Update on this, Super Electrician just answered me and said “In our NC climate a 350watt unit is sufficient” FYI for what it’s worth.

Found out I wasn't right fwiw. There are 4.5L motors too. Like I said, didn't know much about six bangers.

Hey Glenn, I have the exact same boat with a generator. The 4.3’s are very easy on gas, we don’t run ours hard and filled it three weeks ago, take it out at least once during the weekdays and always on the weekends for 2-3 hours at a whack so in three weeks it’s only down to 3/4 of a tank (130 Gal) I’ve had no issues with the engines, start right up and don’t get hot, have good power for little girls and maneuver well around the dock. I’ve had a few small issues with the shifting being stiff and not fully coming out of gear when going to neutral, makes for and interesting docking. The Queen and I are just doing the clean thing (mostly I) which never stops as you know.

Hey guys- I am downsizing from my SR 380AC. I am looking at a 1999 290 that has been repowered with 4.5L Mercs (250 HP versions). Boat looks to be in great shape (haven't seen in person yet). Anything special to look at with one of these boats? I have been a boat owner for a long time so I know the basics to look for.
So Glenn, after a “little” reading your engines are purpose built by Merc using a block supplied GM. I would be VERY interested in how they perform for you if you decide to buy the boat.

Yes this boat has been repowered (2017) with the new 4.5L 250hp Merc's. I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with these engines. So far I have had no negative feedback on them.

So repowered four years ago. That's great. We're the drives and or transom assemblies done at the same time by any chance? If not, that's where if concentrate my efforts in looking for any potential issues.
