Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

genset should be a $30-$40 investment including gaskets if it is just the impeller. nomidea about the hull but a surveyor can find a rotted core with a hammer, they tap the hull but will need the boat on the hard to do that.

if the marina has good service dept. there should be no worry about a previously cracked block. blocks on marine engines are replaced all the time. it was most likely a long block replacement and is verry common. i am having one done this winter. you will love the 350's in this boat. i have twin 5.0 and alpha drives and have zero problems with power.

outdrives are made for the ocean and with regular maintenance, there is no problem with them being in the water. bravo3's do have a more troubled past with corrosion but there are thousands of boats out there with them and without problems.

Hey Guys, this is more of a generic question, but before I run through the motions, can someone give me a rough guide for how much bottom painting should be? We keep her in long beach, CA and this will be the first time we're having it done. Alaos any other common maintenance items that we should take care of while we're having it hauled out? Cheers!

Zink replacement also check the bellows, grease the gimbal bearing, change lower unit oil.

1 gallon of paint was just enough, litteraly had just enough when it was thinned according to the manufacturers recomendations.

One gallon of Pettit hydrocoat was plenty for me. I had estimates from $650 to $1600 to have it done depending on product and barrier coat or no barrier coat.

what is everyone doing this winter/spring to their boat?

new engine and hot water heater and manifolds for me. if i can afford it i'll have the rear bench replaved too but with baby 2 due in july...you know.

I'm recovering from spending too much on the boat last year, buying a house and having a kid.

Congrats on #2!

PS, maybe this year I will update my ancient pictures...

Curious if my twin 4.3's turn the same way, or is one cw, and the other ccw?
and if so which is which?

your engines turn the same way. your drives will be different.

Hey all, we finally pulled the trigger on our boat

It's a 1998 290 DA, twin 5.7 EFI/Alphas, Kohler 4kw genset. Has the "B" cabin layout with couch and convertible berth. By far the cleanest late 90's we've come across in our search. Not a single tear in any of the vinyl, spotless bilge, brand new bottom paint and a fresh buff and wax.

We're contingent on survey/sea trial of course, but quite excited that we've finally chosen one after nearly a year of shopping.

Here is the dealer listing, would love to hear your comments and any advice going in.

Damn nice looking boat and appears to be a great price. That is the layout I would like if I ever get into a 290, Good job.

Thanks! we got it for about $1k under asking, so I thought we made out pretty good. Dealership has been fantastic as well. The fresh paint and wax, all new coast guard equipment, gave us free storage until needed (since we're frozen solid in upstate NY where it's going and I don't want to have to re-winterize it) and they offer a 2 hour captains orientation for us if we choose.

The only real issue we have seen so far is the canvas is a bit faded in spots and the snap in carpet could use some replacing. It has no electronics so I'll have to add a gps/plotter eventually.

Holy smokes that's a deal!!!

Welcome to the club.

Thank you! In the interest of helping others in the 290 market, here are the other two we considered. We ultimately chose ours because of the dealer backing and prep, since our timeline is stretched being 400 miles away I'm just more comfortable with them holding it for a couple months.

anyways, these also looked like pretty nice examples as well.

I talked with the guy on the 2nd one a couple times, Seems like a fair deal. Apparently my wife does not have the 4'itis that I have yet, Hopefully soon. :D

Who wants to share some pictures of their electronics installs on their 290? (plotters, gps, fishfinder, etc)

Looks like the only option is on a stand through the top dash panel, which I'm not crazy about. I did some fiberglass work years ago for some custom car audio installs, I'm thinking a custom panel atop the dashboard might be in order.
