Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

I know there is a digital therm on the wall. I just got her, so just trying to learn her ins and outs.
Thanks

I've been there.....I'm a newbie myself....kinda fun finding out all the things about your new boat...you can go to the Sea Ray site and probably download an owners and parts manual if you don't have one....enjoy.

Hello, I'm new to the club!! One of the issues I have is that the clarion 6 disk changer will not eject. Does anyone have any tips on how to get it to eject??

Do you still use CD's? Maybe upgrade it to something with mp3 player. there may be a small hole in the front door that wil eject with a paper clip like on a desktop.

Thanks, yeah I'll check it out. I was just trying not to upgrade right away.

Does anyone know if the battery charger will boil the batteries or does it shut off when they are fully charged??

It should shut off by itself. If your batteries are boiling, you have a problem.

mine charges and "maintains" but over time it loses water from evaporation.
distilled water makes them last the longest without deposits

Hello, I'm not sure if my issue fits in here or not but if anyone can be of help it would be appreciated. I just bought a 99 sundancer 290 with twin 4.3's a week ago and on the sea trial it ran great. Yesterday I took it out for a spin, stopped at the fuel dock, practiced docking a bit and it idled and ran great. Ran it back to the entrance to the Marina and when I slowed down to idle, the starboard engine died. When I tried to restart, it make grinding type noise and would start. I thought it might have been a battery issue because when I checked the batteries the fluids were real low so i filled them with distilled water. After the boat being on the charger all night I tried starting the next morning and was able to get it started and it ran great at higher rpm but at idle it was real low and died again. Then when trying to start it again it made grinding type noise again. Is this a starter issue?? Could a starter affect the idle??

Thanks!!

Starter will not affect idle. You likely either have an air flow (dirty flame arrestor) or fuel flow (dirty fuel filter or misadjusted carb) problem. When were the fuel filters and spark plugs last changed?

I had those on my list of things to check however I believe everything was changed in June. How about bad starting batteries, could these effect the idle?? I'm pretty sure my starting batteries are shot. I'm gonna test them this weekend but just wondering if they can effect the idle?

if you had efi a bad battery or terminal may effect something but since you have carbs once starrted they should run with the battery off or disconnected. as magstang1 said, check carb, check flame arrester, check fuel filter, check your wires, cap and rotor and plugs.

Do you think the grinding when trying to start is the starter??

I have to disagree with this. If the boat had a magnito (sp). Then yes, it would run with the battery disconnected like an airplane. This on the other hand has an alternator which requires a completed circuit of a battery.

Replace the parts you know are bad and then start troubleshooting.

Let us know how it goes with the batteries.

sorry, thinking back to the old days. you are right

Hey all, I was directed over here from the other 290 thread because the year im looking at is a 2001 290DA. It has the twin 5.7 EFI's on BIII drives, and a 5kw kohler genset.

I havent viewed the boat in person yet since its 800 miles away, but was wondering a few things regarding that year.

It's in good shape, but the genset only runs on dockside water as its impeller/pump are shot. Not a huge deal, the broker said they havent opened the housing so it might just be the impeller.

Second issue is it spent 3 winters in florida, as recently as 3 years ago. He said the drives were gone through the last time it was brought back to fresh water and all looks good, but should that be of concern as far as the engines go? No way that I know of to tell what kind of corrosion has taken place in the heads.

Also, one of the blocks cracked from a bad winterization so that engine has had its block replaced. A bit of a red flag but Im waiting for the service records to see who did the work (he said local marina)

Lastly, was the 2001 model year still a balsa core construction? I, of course, have read the horror stories of the rotting cores and am not sure if it applies here. Is it unrealistic for a good surveyor to catch bad core rot, since he can't really get to the hull without some cutting/drilling?

Looking forward to some opinions on this boat, the price is right but I'd have to pay about $2k to ship it out.
