Official (1998-2002) 310 Sundancer Thread

How many hours? Have you had any work done on the outdrives?
725 hours, overhauled both outdrives Eight years ago. They get a full svc every other year, oil change every year on outdrives, Plus they have drive showers, and Tiebar.

Interesting... Does anyone else w/ V-drives use them or not? Just bought her and want to do the right thing. Up for suggestions.

zincs are not needed on the shafts or the rudders they're protected with the bonding system.
The only zincs are on the trim tabs and large one on transom and generator if equipped.
You will see large gauge green wires which are part of the bonding system on your rudder shafts ,sea strainers, thru hulls
The shafts are bonded thru the transmissions.
You have to inspect the bonded wire connections for tightness and cleanliness.

Hello, not newbie to boating but picked up a new to me 1999 310. Picked her up late in the season last year (sept 2020). Looking for camper top hardware/canvas. Looked on eBay but no luck. Any advice would be appreciated.

Everyone seems to suggest https://greatlakesboattop.com/ You can tell them the make, model, and year of the boat, and they can quote a price for the canvas set for it.

Coincidentally though, I was logging in here tonight to question a recent experience I had with that company.

In early November, we looked at a 1999 310 and we were ready to buy it, pending a successful survey and sea trial. We knew that it would need a full canvas replacement, so I contacted greatlakesboattop to get a quote. The price for everything except the cockpit cover was right around $3,500 (we didn't need any hardware and we were getting an aft curtain instead of a camper top) Unfortunately, some engine issues became evident during the sea trial for this boat, so we backed out of the deal.

In December, we found a 2001 310 that was in great condition, but it too needs new canvas. This boat passed the survey and sea trial with flying covers, so I went back to greatlakesboattop for an updated quote. I assumed that the price for the 2001 would be about the same price as what was quoted for the 1999 because I wasn't aware of any significant difference between the layout of the 2001 and the 1999.

When I got the quote for the 2001, I discovered that it was more than $1,000 higher than what they quoted for the 1999. When I questioned if this might have been a mistake, they said that it was correct and that there was a major redesign to this model Sundancer in 2000.

I never saw the two boats side-by-side, but they were both the same size and I didn't notice any differences in the cockpit, windshield, or radar arch configuration. Am I missing something?

You may want to check in with @KevinC
He does marine canvas, and i think reps for great lakes. He may be able to shed some light on it as well as others on this thread.

Not knowing all the details let me offer some insight. As @Shaps mentioned we are distributors for GLBT and we also run a discount program for members of CSR. I am also available to help walk you through the process and many time prevent ordering the wrong items by simply asking some questions.

As far as the canvas goes the 1999 310DA was kind of special case as there were three production changes during that model year and each production phase may have been repriced from the previous.

When the canvas was produced for 2001 310DA model year a pricing would have been performed and applied to that model and year. Typically GLBT does not go back a re-price old pieces unless there is a custom canvas color order. That is not to mean they do not have cost increases - I am simply stating they do not look at the amount of material and time required to re-cost it.

Now to the last item of the price increase. There are several things that come into play here and not knowing when this was could lead to some misinformation but I will provide for the following insight. Back in Fall 2019 GLBT had a price increase across the board on all canvas. It was more or less a uniform percentage price increase and you could have received a quote and upon its expiration (maybe 2 weeks) you could have seen a big price jump - that is unfortunate but if you acted within the quote period they would have honored it.

The other thing is you may have been quoted during one of their sale periods and when the sale is over off course the discounts would not be valid. Then you could compound this and have received sale pricing before the price increase and come back in the winter for an updated quote only to be hit with extreme shock of the increase.

Now, while I generally pull all my pricing data for a boat electronically there have been times I requested a verbal/email quote and have found that even when they made a mistake they honored the price quoted even if it was dramatically off.

If anyone has any questions regarding GLBT or canvas I am always happy to assist here, via PM, phone (get my phone from www.covemarine.com) or online request.

Thanks
-Kevin

Thanks for the info., Grec, Shaps and Kevin C. I had asked fellow boaters in Hudson valley last year for local reliable canvas person/company. Will call you guys in next few weeks as boat is still shrink wrapped. Thanks again!

Thanks for the response Kevin. I'll definitely give you a call!

Just to be clear, what made this case particularly odd was that there was a huge jump (both in percentage and dollars) in the price of two of the panels, as compared to the all of the others. The "Bimini Top Fabric" jumped from $632 to $995 (nearly 60%) and the "Sunshade Top Fabric" went from $563 to $1100 (almost double). The difference in all other panels was in the 15% - 25% range. When I first saw it, I was certain that it must be an error.

As an aside (I left this part out of the first post to keep the comparison cleaner), we had also looked at a 340 in late November. That boat also needed a full top, but ended up failing the sea trial. The price that was quoted for a full set for the 340 in November came in at only $200 above the recent quote for the full set for the 310. That seemed about right as compared to the November quote for the 310, given that the boat was larger. The quote that seemed like an outlier was the most recent quote for the 310.

Definitely contact Kevin (above). His prices are great and he was much more helpful than dealing with Great Lakes directly.
