Greg,

I noticed you mentioned one of your gripes was:
no drain in the footwell leading into the cabin
Your should be the same as ours with a piece of teak wood trim recessed in that step area.
Remove the screws and pull it out, you will see there is a drain under it. Yours has probably never been cleaned out and is plugged up. I pull ours off each year to clean it out and give it a blast of water from a hose. Check it out next time you are down at the boat.

aghh thanks! I had no idea there was a drain under there...yay one less gripe!

:smt100 Had the ole head pump motor give up the ghost over the weekend as we were enjoying ourselves on the beach (mama not happy!) Got the pump motor out(actually mama did, gotta love a woman who like to dig right in!) anyone have a "special place" to get a replacement? mine is one of those hybrids that pump water from outside the hull. I believe it is a macerator/selvage pump that I am looking for. :smt100

Hi guys, I just purchased a Magma Catalina grill and I'm looking for ideas on where and how to mount it. My swim platform is the original one and I don't think there is any good place there to mount it, swim ladder on one end and transom door on other. Thanks.

Greg N.

I mounted ours using their flush mount sockets which I installed on the top edge of the deck along the transom in the port corner.
Below is a zoomed in view of a picture with it snapped in place (best I can do right now):

on a similar note of where to put stuff, has anyone found a good spot to put a cigerette lighter? we have a few in the cabin but none in the cockpit, it'd be great to have one for inflating tubes and the dinghy and such....I've found a few spots I've thought about putting one but nothing that seems "convienant"

I have two additional lighter sockets - here are pictures with descriptions:

lighter1.jpg

The first is mounted on the starboard side in the trim panel under the gunwale near the top.
Easy access on the back deck and stays dry too.
The panel on the port side has a water faucet for wash-down.

The second is on a plastic angle bracket that came with the socket, mounted out of sight under the dash, mounted flush with the edge just above the fire extinguisher.

oh I like the idea of under the gunwale! I think we have a winner, that should be fairly easy to run wire back to the dash from.

Thanks KC, I have someone fabricating a rod holder for me that will go on the starboard side, I have an external one there now but it is not solid enough. I have the single rod holder mount that I got with the grill so we'll see how it goes. Here is a picture with the current rod holder. Also Pachanga, I have a cig lighter just below my switches for trailer trim. Having trouble attaching pics, I'll try to do it later.

Great and your welcome.

One issue/complaint I have had with the grill is grease dripping on the deck.
It catches most of it but
I have a small stainless steel cookie sheet that fits under it that I am going to try sandwiching between the posts that snap into the deck sockets.
Hopefully this solves the problem.

I have not had one in 3 years so I joined in on the Coast Guard's annual visit for inspection certification today.
Surprisingly we had 20 boats show up for it, three of them classic Sea Rays - (2) 260DA's and a 290DA.
As far as Ray's it's usually just me and an 85 260DA in the Marina. I thought it was a holiday rush with all the boats.
Any way, I went through everything ahead of time being overly equipped for safety thinking it would be a breeze.
Everything went smooth until the last check of the running lights and dang - the starboard light is out. Fingers crossed, he had one more boat to check and I could fix it.
I was worried it was the bulb as carpets are rolled up around town at 5:00 pm and I would not be getting one tonight.
So I pulled it apart and as soon as the cover screws are out it comes on. Whew - it was corroded up so I cleaned it real good and got my 2012 Safety Sticker - wooohooo!. :smt038
I should probably pull the port light and clean it too. Actually I should swap out all the Navigation bulbs for LED.
Time to put some hours on the engines with the holiday.

A new video clip taken after a long day at "Mosquito Beach" with the kids and friends from Canada - fortunately just it's name.
I'm sharing to spark ideas and show how the inflatable tows behind our 270 with it "clipped" to the swim platform.

Hey K.C. I noticed that you "bench" seat is actually a bench. Did it come that way or did you modify it to that configuration?

Modified - It is an aluminum frame that attaches to the lower sides of the existing seat box. It rests on the raised floor and has legs that swing away for access to the fuel tank if needed. Set-up for more seating space and easy scuba diving. Jump seats and sliding cooler were removed for more storage space.

One more question K.C. Where/how did you get that boarding rail that is attached to you swim platform? The Admiral would like to know. Thanks

The previous owner had that custom made by a local fabricator when the aluminum platform was made. His use was primarily for scuba diving, we do some but it has worked really nice for any use of the platform. Something real sturdy to lean against and hold on to, better than just a piece of bent railing or handles. It is a simple piece of aluminum tubing, bent with square pads welded at each end. I polished it up and protected it with "Woody Wax" which really seems to be working good. Any shop that does aluminum welding and fabrication could make something similar, even for a fiberglass platform. I can supply better pictures of it if needed.

Hey KC,

Is 3900 WOT or at cruise? I'm curious at what speed the 270 needs to plane

I noticed that you have raced, I raced APBA for a few years in the Super Sport class, a mod-vp with capsule and stock 150 outboards. It was alot of fun but expensive.

Thanks

Mike

Cool with the racing
Expensive - yes but we do miss it. We were always able to beak even at each event provided nothing broke.

We usually cruise between 3700 and 3900 rpm in the 27 to 30 mph range with no tabs. Closer to 30 mph seems to be the most efficient speed, it feels like it is not "pushing" as much water. WOT is around 4500 but it takes forever to get there and really sucks the fuel with the quadrajets.
It can be kept planing around 25 but any slower tabs are really needed.
This is with average load of 3 to 4 people, 3/4 tank of fuel and water, a water heater and 3 batteries buried in the stern and don't forget the lighter V6's.
I do have the added weight of a windlass and 20 ft of 1/4 inch chain in the anchor locker along with my tool box kept under the v-berth cushions, all of which made a noticeable difference on planing. They seem stern heavy so weight shifting/experimenting helps.
I am in the process of adding fuel sensors in the very near future to really see what speeds are most efficient. With gas prices they should pay for themselves quickly.

Anyway -it's definitely not like jumping in the race boat or pachanga when it comes to planing and speeds.
