Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

I've never removed mine. Not needed to do screw cover or flocking. I'd guess the screws are under the screw cover and when removed will allow the window frame to be removed.

Went out on our first overnight away from the dock and now have some questions.

1. The generator started an ran great from 6pm until about 6am running the heat. At 6am it just died and would only crank over slowly. Started both main engines and the generator fired up quickly. I am guessing the generator is not charging it’s battery? Any ideas?

2. The converter/battery charger works fine off shore power. When I try to use it off the generator it pulls a huge load and trips the breaker. I assumed I could use it to keep the batteries charged while on the hook. Could this be related to the generator battery issue above?

3. Is there a way to access the freshwater tank. I think I have a leak in the tank, a line close to the tank, or the water heater. I am getting freshwater in the aft cabin under the port side cushions in that storage area. There is a small drain hole that leads to the freshwater tank and the water is trickling in there.

Other than the issues above everything worked great.

Thanks!!

I can try for the Genset issue. First I can't remember, is it a Westerbeke? When mine put out to much current it would kick the breaker. There is a adjustment screw on the governor.

If it is a Westerbeke many of us have the complete book on it, you will want and need it. Also it has a governor that requires oil to keep it cool and lub the shaft.

Sorry I forgot to say it is a 4kw Onan.

The weird thing is the battery charger is the only breaker that trips when using generator. When I am hooked up to shore power the battery charger works fine.

Thanks!!

Somebody had posted a question about a product that they thought might be to good to be true. It was a two part apoxey that worked really well for one of the members. I searched high and low tonight for the posting.

Can any one help me to remember the product? It was for core rotting and soft spots
I saw the YouTube video on this product and it looks amazing. Please let me know if anyone purchases/use the product. Would like to know the results.

The water in the aft cabin of on the starboard side might be coming from the ac condensation hose. I had water in that location for years. Pulled the teak trum off the side panel and removed the screws holding in on. Once removed you have access to the water tank also. There was a braided hose 3/4" that had water dripping out. Thought it might come from the Radar arch but it's a drain tube for the ac. I bought 2 elbows and 3' of plastic tube had to drill a hole at the opposite end of the opening where the ac water pump is close to the bulkhead. The hose goes into the rear bilge now. Great not getting water in that locker anymore.

We had minor leakage into that area from the water heater. It seemed to be original and had some corrosion and other issues causing intermittent drips; after we replaced it, the volume of water coming through lessened. We still get a little bit which seems to be backwash from the forward bilge sump, as its output hose is routed through that wall to the outlet on the port side of the boat. We didn't attempt to open the side panel to see for sure.

If the leakage is most noticeable while you're using or after you've used the AC, though, I'd agree with Iprof that perhaps a leaky AC drain hose is the culprit. (Our AC drain hose routes differently, downward and under the galley/aft cabin floor rather than back into the port side area of the heater/water tank.)

I have searched this thread but didn’t find the answers I was looking for. What are people using to screen the 3 hatches in the bow? All my side and aft windows have screens but none of the bow hatches. I thought about doing Velcro but thought I would see if there were any better options.

Thanks!!

Mine was velcro. Worked pretty good, but as is typical when using velcro for this solution, the more you use it the harder it is to get the velcro to stick to the port frame.

There is Velcro on the inside around the frames. I am guessing previous owner put it on. Might have to look under all the cushions again to see if they left the screens. Thanks!!

Mine are also Velcro. I will also try to get you some pictures later today. I will be working on my winter list if anyone needs anything.

Warning to all, Vent and Fill hoses are a bitch to replace but don't forget to check them. Mine were very bad.

I couldn't get good pics, so I'm going to try to paint one.

Around each hatch on the outside edge is a Velcro strip. Each screen attaches to it. I also had interior hatch covers made to cover and block the sun in the summer time. Outside snap covers for the winter. It works very well.

I can picture what you are saying. I was wondering how the Velcro would stick to the screen material. Any tips?

The Velcro is sewn into the edges of the screens.

Sorry, I’m a 268 guy trolling on your 300 threads. Some day, I plan to grow up. :)

Thanks for the photos. That’s exactly what the Velcro looks like in my hatch frames. The previous owner left all the canvas and everything else so hopefully I will find the screens. If not I will have some Velcro sewn into some screen.

Thanks!
