Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

Cool! Thanks for the info.

I didn't realize golf cart batteries had that much capacity. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Hod did you set up the battery switch for the port bank?
Bat #1 is the dual purpose, and the two golf cart batteries are Bat #2?
On my old 300 I had one battery dedicated to starting the port motor, and 2 for the starboard and house. I would always run the starboard motor with the switch in the "Both" position. When on the hook I would flip the switch the either #1 or #2 to run the 12 volt stuff.

I have it setup as you've described. There is a battery dedicated to the port engine and then the remaining 2 batteries on on a switch. Battery 1 is the dual purpose battery, and Battery 2 is the golf cart battery bank. I'm going to run throughout the day on just Battery 1, and then I'll switch it to Battery 2 for the night.

TitanTN,
Do you not charge the golf cart battery bank with the engines alternator? Is that why you keep it isolated?

I'm wondering if it is better to charge those with the on-board charger rather than an alternator.

Thanks for the info!

Glad to share! Yes, I charge the golf cart batteries with the alternator (or the on-board charger). It's connected to the battery switch like it is any other 12 volt battery. The switch determines who is getting or giving power. The only battery not on the switch is the starter battery for the port engine. This is completely isolated from the rest of the boat so it is always available for starting. Then by using the "emergency start" relay at the helm, the port side engine battery can start the starboard engine. I'm pretty sure this is the factory setup and it makes a lot of sense to me.

Awesome! Thanks again for the info.

Nice setup and nice boat!

Ok 88WE folks. I need a small favor. I'm going to be a land lover for a good bit but I want to keep my projects moving forward. Surgery on Monday home the following Monday, then home prison for three weeks. Down time of two months.

Can anyone measure the switch panel electroluminescent tape behind the switches? I think it's 1/4" wide but I do not know how long. If anyone has the time on sure a nice day can you post the length.

Dana1a, would the Sundancer dash be similar enough? I have the boat at home for winter, I can get you the measurments off mine if it would help.

As I'm stuck here for another week. I really don't know. Trying to explain to someone were to look and what to look for is difficult. It may just all have to wait.

Even if if I get it I won't see the boat till June. I might to to see her in three weeks.

4 way bypass at VCU on Monday. Very sudden onset with 80% blockage on my left side. Even the rub rail is off the boat. Seems my slip neighbors went to the shop, picked them up, bought the new screws for them, and have been puttin them back on for me. I don't even have words in me to say how that made me feel today.

Will say a prayer for you! Look forward to seeing a speedy and full recovery. GOD bless, JC

You will be in our prayers.
I will measure my dash tomorrow and let you know what they are on the Sundancer. They should all be the same except for the dash switches, yours is longer I think, but probably the same width. That one was skinny as I remember.

Thank you, all of you.

This is all leads me to another question, Seahorse has never been a slip queen. The only time she is still is in the winter months. She has already been out and running the river, never has she sat still in the spring and summer. Neighbors know where the keys are so I know her engines will get run up to temps. She has AGM batteries, so no big worries there. Her charger are working fine. Her bottom paint is a year or so old.

Is there anything I can do today (have done) to prep her for a three month layup?

Yeah! Put beer in the fridge so it's nice and cold when you finally get back!!

You should be fine, as long as you have people looking over her, no worries.

If she is on charge and has fresh stabilized fuel in the tanks and someone will run her a few times during your absence, and check you bilges, I think you will be fine for three months. Also, since it's heading into warm weather, there is on risk of freezing so there is less to worry about. Maybe your friends could run your AC a few times for 15 minutes or so to keep everything 'exercised', other than that I can't think of anything.
I'll get those measurements in a couple hours and post them here.

OK, on my 89 300DA The piece of EL tape under the switches is 1 inch high by 15 inches long. The piece illuminating the SR logo is 6" long x2.5" high. I also have two short strips for the switch panel down by the side bolster but I could not get to those with out removing that entire panel.

Somebody with a WE needs to check their setup to verify these measurement translate from the DA to the WE. If they don't, someone please post the actual measurements.

Whoa--sorry to hear that, dwna1a!!! Glad you're paying attention to the recovery requirements, though--rehab well and hopefully you'll be better than new when you're finished!

I think the only thing not mentioned yet is running the generator regularly, too.

Sorry to hear you needed the by-pass, but glad you got the care you needed. Rest up and be ready for the next round!

I'll try to check my light strips for you today.

Good luck with the procedure. You're boat sounds like it's all set to wait for your recovery. You'll be back in the bilge before you know it.
