Ocean Vodka

When I drink, my flavor is Rhum, Mt Gay to be exact and I'm incensed that the French have bought that product and have slaughtered it and jacked the price.

But I digress, I'm all so often amused at what I've seen in prestige marketing in Vodka and Tequila. I think the material difference between a 3d Smirnoff and a Grey Goose is nominal except the price for a frosted bottle and ten X the advertising.

Vodka should be fermented from potato not grain, it should be multiple distilled and bottled in glass and 100 Proof or higher.

Russian sounding names on labels for product made in stainless steel factories in some third world country aren't very impressive except for taste.

For my money the real test for Vodka is to place a few drops of different products on a horizontal glass mirror. Lite them off with a clean propane igniter and let them burn out. The one with no or less residue will be the smoothest of its genre ie grain or potato derived. Any water spot like residues indicate an impure product. Try it, you might become a Popov fan!

I know of some personal examples where my head would disagree with this statement...one kind of makes my head feel like this :smt021:smt043

I have yet to be able to try the Ocean Vodka, has Anyone yet?

I think that a locally made (Oregon)"Crater Lake" is pretty good as well.

Sorry, I'm not an elitist, but the Popov....is rubbing alcohol.

I was kidding about Popov .. but I wasn't kidding about the test ...

The crushing hang over from some spirits is often made worse from stuff that isn't removed by distillation like "fusel oil" or fusel alcohol. This stuff adds taste at a cost in physical manifestations.

"Very high concentrations — usually caused by incompetent distillation — can cause acute illness, including headaches, nausea, vomiting, clinical depression, or coma. Such a liquor may be referred to as rotgut." Wikipedia

Sounds like bad hangover symptoms to me.

To really get this stuff out charcoal filtering before the second distillation is a great method.

Some vodkas will appear oily when poured into a clean glass and swirled it will cling. Others will sheet down the sides cleanly. Guess which is gonna give you the best cleanest taste and the least hang over symptoms ?

Again only speaking from personal experience...Captain Morgan .....oh yeah we are talking vodka...Grey Goose...I will take my personal experience over any lab results any day.

I heard a rumor last night that if you take your Lesser expensive "clear" alcohols and run it through a Brita filter a couple of times, it tastes better and removes the impurities.

There is another filter that is made I forget the name of that you can run your colored alcohols through to do the same thing.

Has anyone tried this and how effective is it?

Todd - the Crater Lake is awesome - it's the Admiral's favorite. There is another
distillery down here called New Deal http://www.newdealdistillery.com/
We tried their Portland 88 a few weeks ago, it's every bit as good as any we've had.

We'll keep our eyes out for the "Ocean".

Mythbusters did a piece on this. The result was that the triple filtering was not worth the trouble and it will NEVER make a cheap vodka as smooth as a premium vodka.

I love posts such as these, but are there any real drinkers here? I mean Bourbon drinkers! Bourbon boating sounds better than vodka boating (as long as there is a responsible and sober driver).

I love Jim Beam, so much so it literally put me down on the floating dock one time this past summer. I have to be careful with Jim as he can put a hurting on me real quick. Lets just say I have not touched the stuff since my "crawled up on the dock" incident this past summer.
