After spending a night on the boat, we noticed an occasional, very faint odor of gas in the aft cabin. The first thing I did was check the engine compartment for any smell of gas, and there wasn't any. I still checked the fill hose and vent hoses, and didn't find any leaks or anything. I noticed there was a plastic cover under one of the cushions in the aft, so I removed it and found that part of the gas tank is underneath with access to the sending unit. When I removed the cover, I could smell gas for a few seconds, then it dissipated. As a precaution, I replaced the rubber gasket around the sending unit, along with new self sealing screws. Even with that, I still can smell an occasional scent of gas. At this point I'm not sure what it could be. Is it possible that the sendiing unit itself is somehow letting an odor through, or the plastic gas tank? I thoroughly checked down low in the bilge and whatever I could see of the gas tank, and there are definately no gas leaks. I was also thinking maybe one of the hoses is letting the odor through.
The boat is a 2000 sundancer.

One place you can look if the motor is carbureted is the bowl float needle and seal. This is a long shot but if the needle and seal under the float leaks it will leak into the carb. It sounds like you have checked every thing else.

DVX,

Thanks for the reply, the motor is fuel injected. I also checked the hose from the tank to the motor. At this point I'm not sure what it could be, but was wondering if one of the hoses or the sending unit itself could somehow be leeching the odor. In any case, it's frustrating, and very annoying.
