So I guess my boat felt Gary was getting to much attention. The O ring that seals my Engine heat exchanger to the endbell failed.. Made a nice salt water mess but washed right up. Cummins is coming this week as its a warrty item. Hopefull they can fix the other motors hunting issue at the same time.

Sorry to hear that... Doesn't sound like it was anything major if you didn't notice the boat overheating. Was this a gradual failure or all of a sudden? The raw water circuit doesn't have much pressure in it so I'm surprised you didn't see it leaking before it made a big mess. Was there any blockage in the system that caused it? You have some crap in there or impeller parts you don't know about?

My boat is all happy now and the engine room is clean, no cracked brackets, hose clamps all checked, no leaking manifolds and the hydraulics are tight. Knock on wood. We were out all day yesterday and nothing broke on the boat. How often does THAT happen?

Maybe you need to install the sub-harmonic distortion balancers

Gary,
Ur the 2nd person to say that there isnt much pressure and i should have seen a sign . Guess im not looking in the right locations. ( kinda hard to miss water all over batteries ) I didnt take it apart as for once its a freebee... But im sure there will be something that they find to change that. Glad all is finally good on ur end. I guess the moons aligned of a short period of time

Update: What i was calling the heat exchnger there telling me is my after cooler. Im slightly confused still. In any event they say I have a bad casting. At first they removed the entire after cooler and said well see u when the new comes. After some conversation they did some type of repair. IT held and I was able to go on my trip this past weekend . I have to get out my manual because I would swear its labeled a heat exchnger in there. Oh and they wont change the stb motor cooler until it fails .

: )

Re: O ring failure on heat exchanger endbell

Well... an aftercooler is a heat exchanger. In fact, all the things attached to the raw water cooling system are heat exchangers. The aftercooler is a specific heat exchanger that extracts the heat from the intake air stream and is in between the turbo and the intake manifold on the head. Therefor it has raw water on one side and hot air on the other. Sorta like me when I'm swimming.

The other 3 typical heat exchangers on the raw water loop are for the coolant, fuel, and transmission. It's good to be able to identify all 4 of these heat exchangers by their function. They all get dirty, can leak, and ruin your day if not taken care of. Sorta like me when I'm swimming.

A lot of times people just refer to the coolant heat exchanger as "the" heat exchanger and refer to the others as the aftercooler, transmission cooler, and fuel cooler...

It's not all that confusing.
