NuTeak Observations after a Season of Use

I'm not really in the market, at least for now, but did want to say your write up is great. Thanks for taking the time to share......the product looks fantastic.

As I mentioned in the original post, I liked the product enough that I decided to install on the floor of the cockpit (previously only had the swim platform and the stairs). Visited the boat yesterday to inspect and grabbed these photos.

I like the installation - John (the installer) takes the time to add the proper finishing and details.

Also as I mentioned in the original post, I have a couple of dogs. To cut down on claw marks, I picked up an outdoor rug that I will cut and trim to lay out when the dogs are on board. I think it'll work...

Boat is still in the shed...gets launched just before Easter weekend...so some of these pics are a little dark and muddy.

Now just need the next two weeks to pass. Heading to Pebble Beach, CA on Wednesday for a little golf, so that'll help!

I really like the way it is rolled around the edge of the steps.

Is that a big hatch that the table is mounted on?

Greg,
That is a big hatch, however it will hopefully never be opened. It is bolted down and only for major repairs (e.g., if you had to take out one of the fuel tanks). One installer of another product recommended filling in the crack and putting the product right over top. Probably wouldhave worked, however I wasn't comfortable with that approach.

I really like the bullnose on the stair as well. Provides a lot of heft to the look and means that you're not looking at a glued or caulked edge.

Paul

Never noticed the question until now - sorry Rob. My marina - Beacon Bay, which is part of Parkbridge, did the installation. They are not doing installs any more as the amount of work involved made it tough to be profitable.

As an update - three seasons in and I'm still very happy with the installation.

Hi, new to this thread. Paul I have been following your 560 threads since I have been looking for a 560. I purchased one in January. I'm working with a guy to do a full sythetic teak install. We are have issues deciding how to do the steps, so I came back to this thread. How did you guys do the steps? I see you put the bull nose on, I'm assuming to deal with the pitched step and the lip. I'm curious if you just followed the countour of the step or if you leveled it out somehow. My thinking is that even with the bullnose you still have a contour to deal with. In my mind it would be severly noticeable and not like real teak. Do we just deal with it? Is it noticeable once installed?

Thanks

Dquint,
First - congratulations on buying yourself one fine boat! I continue to be impressed with the handling characteristics of this boat and just love taking her out on the water.

As for the Nuteak, my installer followed the contour of the stair. It took more time to do it this way (i.e., needed to mold the Nuteak), however it really needs to be installed this way for safety reasons. That contour grabs your foot. At first, the installer mused about either filling in the contour or shaving off the edge. Either way would have been the wrong way to go about it. As for the looks, the contour looks fine. I think if you had real teak there, you'd still have to have the contour there for sure-footedness. There is nothing out-of-place about how it looks. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Paul, thanks for the advice, after going down to the boat this weekend with the installer and some test pieces. I agree with everything you said. It was very hard to visualize untill I saw it in person.

On another note, I am replacing the two helm seats with Stidd's. Did you replace your baseplates when installing your new seats? If so how did you go about removing the headliner to access the bolts? I was thinking of maybe have a machine shop fabricate me a adapter to avoid this.

Sorry for all the questions, You have just done all the stuff I plan to do.

Dave

Ask away. I love questions.

The seat upgrade is a good thing to do and am very happy that I did. I'm not 100% sure what you mean about removing the headliner. There was a cover over the base plate, but off-hand, I don't remember how it was affixed. I did remove myself though and don't recall it being an issue. What would have been an issue was removing the base plate itself. It is not the same size as the new base plate. I started to remove, however after taking all of the very long screws out, determined that the base plate was also glued to the floor and it would have been a mess to remove. After scratching my head for a second, I decided that the existing base plate was firmly in place, put the screws back in and attached the new base plate right on top of the old. I had the folks at the marina ream the holes to attach. The setup looks fine (no one would know) and the seats aren't going anywhere.

Paul

Thanks Paul, I guess I was assuming that the base plate was through bolted, which would require getting to the nuts from inside the cabin ceiling, thus removing the headliner. But if you say you got the bolts out with out getting inside, I guess my assumption is wrong. I'm going to the boat on Friday and I will check things out fully. What you did is what I think I'll do if I can not remove the old baseplate. Or like I said I will have an adapter made.

I'll post some pics when I get it done.

Hey Paul,

Fully realizing this thread is a few years old at this point, I have a quick question if you... How has the synthetic teak held up w/ the dogs? We're considering the same project and have a 90lb and very active 2 year old lab.

Thanks!
Doug

Doug, I have had mine 2 seasons now. With 2, 90# plus, but older labs, and 4 kids. It looks the same as it did the day of install. I couldn't be happier with the choice.

We've had Nuteak on our boat two years, love it and consider it the best upgrade we've ever made on a boat in 40 years. Not only did we do all the outside deck areas we did the Salon with Teak & Holly as well as steps. Liked it so much we had them do the Head areas as well in the exterior material. Next boat will be done as well.

I'll second that.

I loved it as well until my wife spilled boat polish on it. I have not found anything to take it off. Only suggestion I got is to sand it and I an very hesitant to do that. Anyone else find themselves in this situation?

Did you contact the manufacturer?

I've been planning a swim platform project and entertaining some form of faux teak so I've been following this thread.

I took a Caribbean cruise last week on a ship that used real teak on all of the stairs and faux teak on the decks. The temperature was in the mid to high 70's for daylight hours. The faux teak was so hot for the bulk of the day that it could not be walked on without shoes for even a few feet. Several people on this forum had indicated that the teak alternatives were hot but I hadn't anticipated that kind of temperature. My feet are not heat sensitive as I live and boat in Florida in bare feet.

I realize that this thread was expressly about the NuTeak product and this product on this cruise ship is unlikely to be NuTeak but I had to share my observation. I'm not sure that I am considering this approach anymore.[/QUOT

I took a cruise in May. The Carnival cruise ship had some brand of faux teak deckingaround the pool area. I have to agree with you, the decking was to hot to walk on. Many people burnt thier feet.
