Want some ideas on updating your older sea ray?

I keep running across this ad and thought i would post it here. I copied the pics to my PC to try and get some ideas on updates to my amberjack.

The work done on this boat amazes me!! But i dont know if he'll get his price.

What do you think??

Wow, it’s impressively nice. No question about that.

I really like the blur wood accents.

Still, $49,900 for a 1987 Sea-Ray 270 AmberJack is going to make it a difficult sell.

In today’s economy, that’s about what I think I could get for my boat and it’s a 2003 280 Sundancer with generator, air conditioning, radar, and many other goodies.

Very impressive, I hope he wasn't planning on a profit, just a labor of love.

Looks great - I really like what he did with the helm. Those new gauges really set it off. I think he'll end up being lucky to get half that amount - even that might be pushing it.

Nice updated boat! I would love to overhaul and update mine like that. Do you think it originally came with twin V8s or was that an upgrade too?

Makes me wonder if my 1986 268DA would accept V8s instead of the factory V6s (4.3L). If so, I might do that when it's time for new fresh engines.

Yep, this definately will have to be chaulked up to a labor of love (non profit of course)!

Looks nice though and well thought out.

With all the work he put into this boat I bet his wife hates it! (grin)

Nice looking, but no way he will get that price for it. A guy in our marina just bought a leftover 2008 270AJ for $49K. What would you rather have ?

Good point. I saw the boat on eBay a while ago and emailed the guy about a part on it, he was very smug about the boat and sounded like he wouldn't budge on the price. I hope he really enjoyed working on it, because he's about to find out all his labor was free.

Beautiful boat though, he defanitely did a great job

So the price is still high and there is this little tidbit:

This Restoration has just been completed, so it hasn’t had a Sea Trial yet.

Damn...is this what you can get done when winter runs from September to May?

nice clean boat but he is a dreamer on the price

for that kind of money, it should have efi engines and bravo drives or at least counter rotating alpha gen II's

"rebuilt engines" with 0 hrs, that is scary

I know about this. I made the same mistake once on a much larger scale.
I had over 300K in a 42 Chris Craft. I felt so stupid when I decided to sell it and realized what it is really worth. That is the biggest "bath" I have ever taken.

Here is a photo gallery of that boat. It was an awesome boat but a foolish thing to do.

MAN that boat was beatiful! They would've had to bury me in that thing before I sold it! Its a good lesson tho...theres only so much you can put into ANY boat before you find yourself upside down. I wonder if that 300k figure includes labor...I doubt it.

By the way, whats the boating like down in Austin? My brother lives there and is trying to get me down there too. He says its pretty nice but he isnt a boater. What do you think?

Thanks, I thought it was a sweet boat too.
I sold it to get back in another 500DA but I kinda miss it.

Austin has a huge boating scene. We have lake travis and and lake austin.
If you like boating Austin is a great place to live.
I grew up in the caribbean and was amazed to find more boats here in the middle of Texas.
Nice clear water too.

Oh and that Chris Craft took over three years to re-do.
Making an old boat perfect is very do-able but the time and money just make it not worthwhile.
It's a shame because there are some really cool older boats. Even this Amberjack in the thread is a cool boat.

If you are the guy who comes in after it is all done, you can make out pretty well. They guy who got that Chris Craft got a super fine boat for the money and he loves it.

This Amberjack guy with either eventually lower the price or keep it. I feel his pain. ;-)

Hmmm....well now that I've heard it from another boater...its gospel. Maybe I need to start shopping the resume...cuz right now anywhere is better than Detroit area.

I hear you. I'm in the same boat right now. I've put about as much $$ and time into my 78 as I can justify. I need a bigger beam and plan on getting one so I dont need to pour money in that I wont get back. I've maxed out the street value and no one is gonna want to give me what I would want for a restored 78 when they can get much newer boats for the same or less. That Amberjack is sweet but he shoulda sunk that mofo and bought himself what he wanted that boat to be...a 91+ Amberjack!
