Northstar NS 100 bites dust

Guess I was pretty lucky getting 6 seasons out of it compared to the horror stories I've read here. On my 270 aj I don't have much room if any to mount a vhf. That was what was nice about the ns100. I am looking for pictures, advice, etc on where to install a new unit. I am a budget boater and doling out a grand is out of the question. Any advice is appreciated!!

Any chance the handset and cord are in working condition and could be purchased?

eBay has a couple. For the same price, you could geta new SH or Uniden and mount it where the handset is now, or bracket mount one where the box is next to the mike unit. Put a Carling Marine USB adapter where the mike plug is.

I would go with a ray260. Same style as the ns100 but better all around. I was happy with mine until I did a full electronics upgrade to simrad at which time I swapped mine out. Only used it for a season. Let me know if you want it.

Icom 400 is a black box radio BOE had it for $400.00 & Icom has a $100 from time to time net $300.00.

The black box style with remote speaker is the issue. There's only a few options that will work.

Does the ray260 plug into the existing ns100 plug or does everything need to come out? Is it compatible with ns100 speaker and black box?

I'm probably going to be in the same situation with the same model boat soon.

I recently saw a picture of a 270 AJ that had mounted a standard VHF radio where the NS100 black box speaker is located. It looked like it covered the whole area. Maybe not the ideal replacement, but it looked reasonably clean. They also used the same mic hanger location.

The Ray260 is not compatible with the NS100. Nothing is. Anything you put in there will require the full install.

I happen to have a new in-box NS 100 complete except for the handset on a shelf in my garage. It is the same vintage as the one on my 2006 260 Sundancer.
