Non Boating advise wanted

You're correct the job pool is VERY big. We post an ad and get hundreds of replies in FL it's a PITA going through the resumes. Then when you do hire, them half don't want to work, even some of those with a doctorate just want to collect the salary.

Try it here, when I advertise a position, I normally cut it off after a day or so, which is about 100 apps. I then cull it down to a short list and email (I've given up ringing) about 20 of them with the days I will be interviewing and to please contact me to arrange a time.

Of that about 5 - 8 arrange an interview, about 3 turn up for the interview, and sometimes one is suitable.

Here, in the states, I think with them cutting unemployment benefits back to six months things will change. I keep seeing the folks they show on the news and I'm sorry for them but let's get to the real folks. Two years of free money had to end....and no one can tell me they couldn't find A job in two years! I did hear one reporter say the truth, now folks might have to take a job they might not want to or a job that pays less than what they were making in the past. Some folks were making $350 a week tax free, that's half what my wife brings home per month!

Off my box now

Unemployment benefits are taxable income. Of course every individuals situation is different but, if they meet the threshold they are taxed in their unemployment benefits.

Unemployment benefits are the difference between having a chance to find a job in your industry and taking a desperation job flinging burgers. Look around at the "entry level" service jobs that used to be available to kids coming out of high-school, and you will see that they are filled with people from all stages of life. That's not because these guys had an epiphany at 45 that they would rather spend their days asking "do you want to upsize your value meal?"

Unemployment is high not because people are sitting on their butts avoiding finding jobs. There just aren't enough jobs in the economy yet. And forcing previously middle-income adults into wage-slave status isn't going to help, because they will NOT be adding "purchasing power" to the economy. It also takes away the entry-level "learn how to work" jobs from the kids who are coming out of school. THAT, more than anything else, is producing a generation of people who don't know what it's like to be part of the workforce, since they are still sponging off of their parents (who might just be working at McDonalds now).

It's a lousy situation all around, with no good solutions other than time. But time is against anyone who hasn't been working in their field for longer than 3 months, since being out of work for any longer than that is a HUGE obstacle to overcome in the HR screening process. Forcing skilled people to take menial jobs just makes it that much harder. Because nothing says "hire me for a skilled position" more than taking a year off to be a Wal-Mart greeter.

Todd, thank you....I did not know that

Well hmmm gotta think about that , because I own a small business and in the 90s we used to see 10 to 25 walk in job applicants a month... Now we see 0.....now would this be because the are all sittin on their fat asses all day on Facebook collect government money and EBT cards for food, yeah I think so. Movers and shakers don't depend on unemployment there are a lot of people (most ) on unemployment NOT wanting to get a job because they can make more from the gov. Let's see what happens now.

Once the gov reopens after the three week vacation.....they will vote more money

We don't have a time limit on unemployment benefits here. I believe they need to apply for so many jobs per month to show they are seeking work. Hence my previous comment, so many applicants, only a very small percentage will turn up for an interview, as they have met the criteria for the dole by submitting an application.

If you have a few children here, many of them are better off on unemployment than working.

The other part though as I n the previous post, if you are made redundant from a management position in your mid 40's on, good luck. I have had 4 friends go through this, and trying to find something of the level they were at.......

One of the big reasons I keep fighting with my own business, it's stressful, but it does provide a choice

I'm on the dole, I like it 'cept they ought to be giving me more. It's hard to be extravagant on a fixed income you know... but, :smt115 if the workin' guys each paid in a little more...

Maybe consider job where your pay is under the table. You can still keep the government benefits without reporting income or paying taxes. Perhaps pimping or dealing coke would be good options. You could use your free phone to set up the deals.
