No Wake!

I have to agree. Slow down, blast the horn a few thousand times, a nice little "get out of the channel" and off we go...........

Well, not that the nimrod fishing in the channel will know this, but:
1 short - moving starboard, leaving you to port
2 short - moving port, leaving you to starboard
3 short - moving astern
4 or more - danger

1,000 or more - you, sir fisherman, are a pain in the ass

On the issue of safety and channel fishing. Jon boat off to the starboard of the channel fishing, another cruiser off my port bow, jet ski off the starboard bow, me on plane. I know the cruiser and I will pass safely, but the jet ski and Jon boat.... I wasn't sure just what to do. I ended coming off plane and down to slow idle to be safe, but what would have been the right thing to do? I wasn't going to swamp the Jon boat but to fish there! and that jet ski? Gurr!

What you want to do and what you have to do are going to be different things in this case. I want to slap the fisherman upside the head for obstructing a busy channel. Have to always remember however, that a skipper is responsible for any damage, injury or loss of life resulting from their wake. Swamp that jon boat, someone drowns, and whether or not you were within the rules of the road, its still your ass in a sling. I always remember that, and common courtesy when I am out, but seems to me 98% of people either don't care or don't know. I still try and do the right thing anyway.

Well I could use one of these at our marina, but the trouble is people think slowing down mean 8 knots with their box high in the air plowing a 3 foot wake behind them. No wake means no wake regardless of the speed you are doing.
I call that a courtesy plow.

Gee, thanks for caring enough to cause your greatest possible wake. :-/

Ok...so since we're on the subject of no wakes...
What is everyone's opinion on a boat anchored in a channel. Just sitting there...fishing...in the middle of a heavily traveled channel. So, what do YOU do as the boat on plane with another boat headed toward you and the fishing dude between the two of you?
Give them as much room as you can, and slow down only when you can't leave a lot of space.

If one CHOOSES to play on the "freeway", one should not be surprise by traffic!

This aggravates me to no end. Every time I boat up Barnegat Bay I see a few fisherman anchored in the channel, normally I try to stay clear and give them a wide berth. However that means me leaving the channel which makes me need to scan for other boats while constantly monitoring my depth gauge. It's not a big deal, I guess stupid is as stupid does, right? I wonder if on the car drive home they stop in the passing lane while on a bridge to get out and stretch their legs.

Ok, I've gotta say.... I love that comment!

In all fairness to the Jon boat, he was to the far side of the channel. It was the jet ski shooting between us that scared the he'll out of me. With the cruiser on my left and the Jon boat on my right there was little room to maneuver

If someone anchors in the shipping channel in the Columbia River, they don't stay for long. With the big ships going up and down the river, they are not shy of laying on the horn. First they will warn you with 3-blasts. If you don't move, they give a very long one, then they are on the radio to ther CG.

No Wake: I was at Sand Island over the holiday with some friends. They have a 42 footer Marine Trader. This channel is 5mph and no wake. This 60ft boat from Kookafornia comes plwing up the channel nose high. Rocked the crap out of us all. Broke the swim platform on the Trader. I got on the radio and asked if he understood it was 5 mph? He actually responded by saying he was only going 7kn. I then asked what part of no wake that he didn't understand. About that time my buddy jumped in his dingy to go give a peice of his mind. The captain waved him off like he didn't care.

The kookafornian docked at St. Helens and we docked to, he went running and screaming as I looked to tie up the dingy. Yep he forgot too. A shouting match started and I pulled him away and called the Sherrif's office and they came out and wrote a report. The kookafornian would not even apploigize and stated loud enough that it was no big deal that is what insurance is for! Well I had to just about peel my buddy off of him and got him back to the other side of the river.

With my daughters and my safety first, coming off plane and throwing no wake towards the Jon boat was first in mind.... Let um catch that last fish! As for the jet ski, well let's just sat I hope he caught the fishermens line, and sucked it into his impeller, burned up his pump and give the Jon boat a nice ride :)

I can clearly relate to this as in our cove as I said in my first post here we have the same type of problem. Only difference is we don’t have big boats coming in, but we do have a good many new boaters as our marina is a dealer as well. Many people will buy their first boat here and go out on their marry way without a clue. It was not that long ago I was a new boater as well, and I was not aware of all the very issues I get pissed at other boaters for now, but I did my best to educate myself as quickly as possible. What I don’t have a tolerance for is those that don’t at least try to educate themselves or the ones that just don’t care. That’s the BS about it, boating is a recreational activity, which by definition should be fun and stress free. One way of making it so is by being courteous to the other guy and be aware of what you are doing which will affect them. Even now sometimes I catch myself throwing the wake, but then I realize my surroundings and think to myself now much I get pissed at my home port when someone else does it, and I adjust my boat accordingly.

I remember a time several seasons ago when coming home from a weekend trip coming into the 6 knot speed zone of Kent Narrows. I slowed down before coming to the markers as there was a lot of traffic coming out. Well here comes this new and very pretty Sea Ray 48 DA Bridge boat and at the very second he passed the 6 knot marker he opened it up and threw a huge wake that plastered my port side as well as the six boats all in line behind me. Now do you think I have any respect for any A-Hole like that! Myself I would have maintained my 6 knot speed until I was passed the boats coming in. It would have only taken a minute and I am on the water, I got all day!

It is just a simple matter of boater courtesy, and courtesy is contagious.
