NFL concussion protocol

Just reported the Neuro who examined Tua was not fired for misdiagnosis.

Makes ya wonder.

My daughter is a college athlete. She was in an auto crash 8/20 and still can't play due to concussion. The brain is a touchy thing for some people.

My dad got wounded bad in WW2, along with losing his left wing and other wounds he had head injuries. When we were kids we used to feel the dents in his head. I've often wondered if that contributed to his Alzheimer's/dementia.

I coached high school football back when everyone ran the veer option. Pitching was considered a wide-open offense. Tackling was old style leading w forehand and you could tackle through the last sound of the whistle.

I’ve gone to HS football games over last 4 years both in Chicago and in Florida. Everyone runs the spread out of the gun and there is no hitting, not like the old days. Football is safer today.

The fallacy is that head trauma occurs in games w big hits. In actuality it’s during practice 5 days a week for months every year starting in pop Warner through high school. It’s those hundreds of thousands of practice hits accumulating and causing injury most of time w players not even knowing.

My son played winger in travel hockey. His 14U team won the National championship. They won numerous tournaments across US and Canada. He had to hang up the skates and forego playing in the Juniors due to concussions when he was 17. It’s devastating the impairment post severe concussions.
That sucks for your son. I hope he has recovered.

With my son, leading with the crown of his helmet was less about concussions and more about not breaking his neck. If he doubted me, he saw it first hand in a game. An opposing safety tried to tackle our massive tight end. The safety led with the crown of his helmet and caught the thigh pad of the tight end. The kid was knocked out and when he came to he couldn't move his arms or legs. We had an ambulance at every home game and they took the kid off the field taped to a back board with his helmet still on. He regained full mobility at the hospital. He broke his neck and if it had broken 1/8" lower he would be a quadriplegic today. Made an impression on our whole team. The coaches had limited contact practices after the season started. There were only about 30 guys on the team and of the 11 starters on offense, 8 or sometimes 9 started on defense as well. The coaches couldn't afford to lose players in practice.

My high school football team was the last one in the state still running the single wing in the early 80s. IIRC all of the possible plays, except 2, were running plays. The team sucked. Finally switched to a more modern offense my senior year.

Fkg coaches can be so stupid. My SR year, last week of the season we busted the leg of our stud left tackle (future Michigan recruit) cause the coach wanted to go full out. Fast forward 10 plus years. Dickhead finally is headed to the state championship. What does he do? Yep, busts the ankle of his star RB the week before the game going full out. Lost the Championship.

You play crazy sports ….. you are going to get hurt or worse…. I raced my son in motocross…. He got tangled up and missed a jump ….. the bike came down on him the front wheel started on his neck and ran across his face….. the Nobby tire left a bruise just like a tire track….. that was crazy… He was fine…… but got home and his mom lost her shit….. if I remember right she punched me in the chest…. Called me really bad names went into the garage and pushed the bike over off its stand and said that’s it ….. swore and said you two idiots are done

I had to quit playing junior hockey from having a concussion as well. Glad my parents forced me to quit. Who knows the damage I could have done if I kept playing

Yup. Leaves an impression. My Junior year our TE who was 6’6 broke his neck. Wore a halo for a long time and brace rest of year. Guess what he did our senior year? Yup. He played. Never the same again though. Couldn’t catch a fly w a bucket of honey.

Concussions don’t scare me because you get one, two, you can hang ‘em up.

You lead w your head down and there are no second chances.
